The Sudden Surge in VPN Demand After India’s Telegram Ban

When the Indian government temporarily blocked Telegram on June 16 during the NEET re-examination controversy, the digital landscape shifted almost overnight. While many assumed users would flock to alternatives like WhatsApp, Signal, or Instagram, the real winner was an entirely different category of apps—VPNs (Virtual Private Networks). In a matter of days, downloads of the top 100 VPN applications skyrocketed, crossing the 900,000 mark in a single day. This represented a staggering 76% increase compared to the average daily downloads recorded between June 9 and June 15.

A Record-Breaking Spike in VPN Downloads

Data from app intelligence firm App Figures reveals that the Telegram ban triggered the most significant surge in VPN downloads India has seen this year. The numbers tell a compelling story:

  • June 16: On the very day the ban was imposed, downloads of the top 100 VPN apps jumped to 645,000.
  • June 17: The figure exploded further, reaching 919,000 downloads.
  • Growth comparison: This was 76% higher than the average between June 9 and June 15, and 63% above the baseline for the first half of June.

According to the data, June 17 became the best single day for VPN app downloads in India since the beginning of 2025.

What Exactly Is a VPN?

At its core, a VPN acts as a master key for the internet, allowing users to bypass restrictions on blocked websites and applications. It works by rerouting your internet traffic through secure servers located in different parts of the world. Here is a breakdown of its primary functions:

Changing Your Virtual Location

Online content is often restricted based on geographic location. For instance, many movies and TV shows on streaming platforms like Netflix are unavailable in India. By using a VPN, you can change your device’s virtual location to a country like the United States, instantly unlocking that content.

Establishing Secure Connections

Imagine you are working remotely and need to access sensitive data from your office server. A VPN creates a secure, encrypted tunnel between your device and the office network, protecting the data from interception.

Hiding Your IP Address

VPNs encrypt your internet traffic and route it through servers elsewhere. This masks your real IP address, making it difficult for websites, internet service providers, or malicious actors to track your online activities or pinpoint your physical location.

Both free and paid (premium) VPN services are available. Free versions typically offer a limited selection of server locations, while paid subscriptions allow you to choose servers from virtually any country.

Does a VPN Make You Completely Anonymous?

If you believe that using a VPN grants you total invisibility online, think again. This is a common misconception, similar to the idea that browsing in incognito mode leaves no trace. While incognito mode prevents your browser from saving your history, your internet service provider (ISP) can still see your activity if required.

The same principle applies to VPNs. While they add a layer of privacy, they do not make you anonymous. Government agencies can still access records from VPN providers, especially under Indian regulations.

India’s Legal Landscape for VPN Usage

Since June 2022, the Indian government has enforced a rule requiring all VPN service providers operating in the country to store user data for a period of five years. This includes logs of online activity, connection timestamps, and IP addresses. Consequently, if you are using a VPN to access Telegram or any other blocked platform, you are not entirely hidden from authorities. The notion of complete anonymity through a VPN is largely an illusion under current Indian law.

In summary, the Telegram ban has not only driven a massive spike in VPN downloads but has also highlighted the complex interplay between digital privacy, government regulation, and user behavior. While VPNs offer a practical tool for bypassing restrictions, they are far from a foolproof shield against surveillance. Understanding their capabilities—and limitations—is essential for anyone navigating the modern internet.
