YouTube Shorts Undergoes Major Redesign: Dislike Button and Thumb Reactions to Disappear

YouTube is preparing to roll out a significant overhaul of its Shorts platform, aiming to make the short-video experience faster, smoother, and more engaging. The company has unveiled a suite of new features that promise to reshape how users interact with vertical videos. These updates focus on giving viewers greater control, reducing clutter, and enhancing visual appeal.

Faster Viewing with 2x Playback Speed

One of the most notable changes coming to YouTube Shorts is the introduction of 2x playback speed. Users will soon be able to watch any Shorts video at double the normal speed. This feature is designed for those who want to consume information more quickly or skip ahead to the most interesting parts of longer-form short content. YouTube believes this will help viewers digest material faster and navigate to preferred sections with ease.

Dislike Button Removed, New Feedback Options Introduced

In a move that aligns with broader platform trends, YouTube is removing the dislike button from Shorts. Instead of expressing disapproval with a simple thumb-down, users will now have more nuanced tools to tailor their feed. When a video does not appeal to them, they can select “Not Interested” or “Don’t Recommend This Channel.” These options are intended to help the algorithm better understand viewer preferences and reduce the appearance of unwanted content. This approach mirrors similar feedback mechanisms already available on Instagram.

Heart Reactions Replace Thumbs-Up for Likes

The familiar thumbs-up icon for liking videos is also being phased out on Shorts. In its place, YouTube will introduce a heart reaction emoji. This change is aimed at making user interactions feel more expressive and visually friendly. The shift from a binary thumb to an emotional heart symbol is part of a broader effort to make the Shorts experience feel more personal and engaging.

Clear Screen Mode for Distraction-Free Viewing

YouTube is also introducing a new Clear Screen Mode. When activated, this feature temporarily hides all on-screen icons, text, and controls while a video plays. Viewers can enjoy content without any visual distractions, allowing them to focus entirely on the video itself. This mode is particularly useful for watching clips that rely heavily on visual storytelling or cinematography.

Rollout Timeline and Availability

YouTube has not yet announced a specific launch date for these features. The company has stated that the updates will be rolled out in phases to all users over the coming months. This staggered approach suggests that some regions or devices may receive the changes before others.

Expert Insights on YouTube Shorts’ Growth

Industry observers note that while YouTube was a late entrant to the short-video space, it has quickly established a strong foothold. By June 2025, YouTube Shorts was reportedly averaging 200 billion daily views. Additionally, approximately 2 billion hours of Shorts content are being watched on TV screens each month. These figures indicate that short-form video is no longer confined to smartphones; it is gaining significant traction on larger displays as well. The upcoming changes are likely to further solidify YouTube’s position in the competitive short-video landscape.
