Apple Raises Prices on Mac, iPad, and HomePod in India—But iPhones Remain Unchanged

Apple has quietly increased the prices of several of its products in India, including MacBooks, iPads, and the HomePod lineup, while leaving the iPhone untouched. The move has sparked curiosity among consumers and industry watchers alike, especially given that iPhones account for a significant portion of the company’s revenue. Here’s a closer look at what changed, by how much, and why the iPhone was spared.

Which Products Saw Price Hikes?

The price adjustments are not uniform across Apple’s catalog. Some devices have seen modest increases, while others have jumped dramatically. Among the most affected is the HomePod mini, which now costs ₹15,900—up from ₹10,900, representing a staggering 45.87% increase. The standard HomePod also rose sharply, from ₹32,900 to ₹44,900.

Apple’s tablet lineup experienced significant bumps as well. The 11-inch iPad Air now retails for ₹84,900, compared to its previous price of ₹64,900—a rise of roughly 30.82%. Meanwhile, the 11-inch iPad Pro jumped from ₹99,900 to ₹1,19,900.

MacBooks were not spared. The base model MacBook Pro now costs ₹2,39,900, up from ₹1,89,900—a straight increase of ₹50,000. The MacBook Air (512GB) saw a ₹18,000 hike. Even the recently launched MacBook Neo went from ₹69,900 to ₹79,900, marking the smallest percentage increase at 14.31%.

Why the Price Hikes?

Apple CEO Tim Cook hinted at the reasoning earlier this month, pointing to volatile memory chip prices as the primary driver. The company briefly took its online store offline and relaunched it with updated pricing, confirming the trend.

Industry experts and research firms like IDC have weighed in, with Francisco Jeronimo, Vice President of Client Devices at IDC, noting that this is a clear sign of how the soaring demand for AI infrastructure is now directly impacting consumer electronics prices.

The Role of AI and Memory Chip Shortages

At the heart of the issue is a global surge in demand for advanced memory chips, particularly DRAM and NAND flash. AI companies worldwide are buying up these components in massive quantities to train and run their models in sprawling data centers. This has created a supply crunch, as chip manufacturers prioritize high-margin AI orders over consumer electronics components.

As a result, memory chip prices have risen sharply, and companies like Apple are passing those higher costs on to customers. This is not an isolated decision by Apple—it reflects a broader industry shift where the cost of AI infrastructure is beginning to trickle down to everyday gadgets.

Why Were iPhones Left Out?

Market analysts believe Apple deliberately chose not to increase iPhone prices. The reasoning is strategic: iPhones generate the lion’s share of Apple’s revenue. Raising their prices could dampen demand, especially in a price-sensitive market like India. By keeping iPhone prices stable, Apple aims to protect its core revenue stream while adjusting costs on other product lines where demand may be more elastic or less critical to overall profits.

Will Other Companies Follow Suit?

Apple is not alone in feeling the pressure from rising memory costs. Companies like Dell Technologies, HP, and Lenovo have already signaled that higher chip prices could soon affect PC and device pricing. Apple is among the first major consumer electronics firms to implement such increases, but it may not be the last. The coming months will reveal whether other manufacturers follow through with similar price adjustments.

Key Takeaways

  • Apple raised prices on Mac, iPad, and HomePod models in India by 14% to 46%.
  • The HomePod mini saw the largest percentage increase at nearly 46%.
  • iPhone prices remain unchanged to protect core revenue and demand.
  • Rising memory chip costs, driven by AI infrastructure demand, are the main cause.
  • Other PC makers like Dell, HP, and Lenovo may also raise prices soon.
