They operate on entirely different principles, which is why their effectiveness diverges so sharply during this season.

How an Air Conditioner Works in High Humidity

An air conditioner relies on a refrigeration cycle. The compressor cools a refrigerant, which then passes through coils to chill the indoor air. As the air temperature drops below the dew point, the moisture in the air condenses into water droplets and is drained away. This means an AC doesn’t just lower the temperature—it actively removes humidity. Typically, it maintains indoor humidity between 40 and 50 percent, which reduces that sticky, clammy feeling and also helps prevent mold growth. During the monsoon, this dehumidifying effect makes the AC a powerful ally against discomfort.

Why an Air Cooler Loses Its Edge in the Rain

An air cooler works on the principle of evaporative cooling. It pulls air through water-soaked pads, and the fan blows that cooled air into the room. However, this process depends on the air’s ability to absorb more moisture. During the monsoon, the outdoor air is already saturated with humidity. When the cooler tries to evaporate water, the air can’t take in any more, so the cooling effect slows down or stops altogether. Instead of delivering a crisp breeze, the cooler ends up pushing damp, heavy air into the room, which can actually make the space feel more humid and uncomfortable.

  • Room size and ventilation: Coolers work best in well-ventilated spaces where humid air can escape. In a closed room, they can worsen the stuffiness. ACs, on the other hand, are designed for sealed environments and perform consistently regardless of outdoor humidity.
  • Maintenance needs: ACs require regular cleaning of filters and coils, especially during continuous use. Coolers need their water pads replaced and tanks cleaned to prevent algae and odors. In monsoon, cooler pads can become breeding grounds for bacteria if not dried out properly.
  • Health impact: ACs filter and dehumidify air, which can be beneficial for people with allergies or respiratory issues. Coolers add moisture, which may aggravate mold allergies or asthma during humid months.
  • Noise levels: Coolers are generally quieter than ACs, though modern split ACs have become much less noisy. This might matter if you’re using the appliance in a bedroom.

Which One Should You Choose This Monsoon?

If your priority is comfort and you can manage a higher electricity bill, the air conditioner is the clear winner for monsoon months. It keeps both temperature and humidity in check, creating a pleasant indoor environment. However, if you’re looking to save money and the humidity in your area is moderate (below 60 percent), a cooler might still be usable, especially during the early or late hours when the air is cooler and less humid.

For those who want the best of both worlds, consider using the AC on a lower setting or in dry mode (which focuses on dehumidifying rather than intense cooling). This can reduce power consumption while still tackling that sticky feeling. Alternatively, run the cooler during the day and switch to the AC only during the most humid evenings or nights.

Final Thoughts on Monsoon Cooling

Understanding how each appliance handles humidity is key to making the right choice. The AC’s ability to remove moisture gives it a distinct advantage during the rainy season, despite its higher energy use. The cooler, while economical, simply cannot compete when the air is already heavy with water. By weighing your comfort needs against your budget, you can make an informed decision that keeps your home cool and your electricity bill under control.
