The Viral Video That Started It All
The clip in question shows two individuals using a mobile app in front of an ATM. The video suggests that the same application first shuts down the machine and then restarts it. The faces of the people involved are not visible, making identification impossible. However, the app interface looks strikingly similar to the BAT-BMS application previously used to remotely disable e-rickshaws.
Why BAT-BMS Was Already in the Spotlight
Just last week, several incidents came to light where Chinese apps such as BAT-BMS and Lossigy were used to remotely switch off e-rickshaws. Following an investigation, India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) directed Google Play Store and Apple App Store to remove those applications. As a result, BAT-BMS and several others were taken down from the stores.
Can an ATM Really Be Controlled This Way?
This is the question on many people’s minds after watching the viral video. Experts, however, are clear: ATMs are not as easy to compromise as e-rickshaws.
ATMs are connected to a bank’s secure network through encrypted VPN connections and multiple layers of firewalls. Their systems incorporate several levels of security, making it highly unlikely that a common mobile app or Bluetooth connection could control them.

They rely on a host of security technologies, including secure VPN connections, multi-layered security firewalls, restricted access systems, and direct connectivity to authorized bank servers.
