Kerala Students Build Working Weather Models at Little KITEs Camps
More than 14,800 school students across Kerala are currently engaged in building functional weather models as part of the ongoing Little KITEs technology camps. The initiative, organized by the Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE), the technical arm of the state’s General Education Department, is being conducted at 225 centers statewide.
Little KITEs is widely recognized as India’s largest student Information and Communication Technology (ICT) network, boasting over 200,000 members across the state. The students participating in the current sub-district level camps were selected following preliminary camps held at their respective schools.
Hands-On Learning at 225 Centers
According to an official statement, the selected students are taking part in two-day sub-district camps spread across 225 locations. During these sessions, participants are being introduced to the scientific principles that underpin modern weather forecasting systems.
Using programming skills, students are developing prototypes of weather monitoring instruments. These include systems capable of analyzing critical meteorological data such as temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind speed, and humidity to generate weather predictions.
Building with Robotics Kits and Sensors
K. Anwar Sadath, Chief Executive Officer of KITE, explained that students are working with robotics kits already distributed to schools. Leveraging these resources, they are constructing devices equipped with LDR sensors for temperature measurement, servo motors, and Arduino-based components. In addition, participants are building digital anemometers and wind vanes to measure and track wind patterns.
The camps are not limited to weather-related projects alone. Students are also receiving focused training in animation and digital content creation. They are learning 2D animation using OpenToonz software, which covers techniques such as rotate animation, in-between frame creation, lip-syncing, and special effects. Additionally, 3D modeling is being taught through Blender software, giving students a well-rounded exposure to creative digital tools.
Advanced Robotics Kits Coming in 2026
In his online address, Sadath revealed that upgraded robotics kits will be introduced across all schools starting January 2026. These advanced kits will enable students to build everything from moving robots to fully functional smart weather stations, significantly expanding the scope of hands-on learning.
The Little KITEs program is designed to foster innovation, technical proficiency, and creative thinking among students. The ultimate goal is to transform young learners from passive consumers of technology into active creators and problem-solvers who can shape the digital future.
By combining meteorological science with programming, electronics, and design, the camps are equipping students with practical skills that bridge classroom theory and real-world application. The initiative underscores Kerala’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into public education and preparing students for emerging career opportunities in science and engineering fields.
The scale of the program, with its extensive reach across 225 locations and participation of nearly 15,000 students, highlights the state’s robust infrastructure for technology-driven education. As the camps continue, organizers expect the hands-on projects to inspire greater interest in STEM subjects and encourage students to pursue advanced studies in meteorology, robotics, and software development.
