Andhra Pradesh Raises Meal Allowances for Government Hostel and Gurukul Students

In a significant move aimed at improving the welfare of students, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has announced a 10 percent increase in the dietary charges for residents of government hostels and gurukul institutions. The revised rates are set to take effect from the second quarter of the current financial year, ensuring that students receive more nutritious and higher-quality meals.

The announcement came during a review meeting held at the state secretariat, where the Chief Minister underscored the importance of providing students from disadvantaged backgrounds with facilities comparable to those available in private institutions. Despite concerns raised by the finance department regarding budgetary constraints, Naidu directed officials to proceed with the implementation without delay.

Commitment to Quality Education and Nutrition

During the meeting, the Chief Minister emphasized that students belonging to Backward Classes (BC), Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and minority communities deserve access to quality education and amenities on par with their counterparts in private schools. He stressed that nutritious food and a conducive learning environment are foundational to academic success and overall development.

According to an official press release, the Chief Minister firmly instructed authorities to enforce the enhanced dietary rates starting from the second quarter of the fiscal year, even though the finance department had recommended postponing the decision due to financial limitations. He reiterated that education serves as a powerful tool for transforming the lives of students from marginalized communities.

Expansion of Gurukul Institutions

The state government has outlined ambitious plans to expand the network of gurukul institutions across Andhra Pradesh. In future construction projects, priority will be given to establishing new gurukuls over conventional hostels. This strategic shift reflects the government’s commitment to providing holistic residential education to students from weaker sections of society.

Authorities have also been directed to explore the feasibility of adopting eco-friendly, net-zero models for residential schools. Additionally, proposals have been made to develop gurukul campuses with modern amenities and biodiversity parks, creating an enriching environment that supports both academic and personal growth.

Substantial Budget Allocation for Infrastructure

Recognizing the need for well-maintained facilities, the government has allocated Rs 100 crore for the upkeep and maintenance of hostels and residential schools. This investment is expected to address critical infrastructure gaps and ensure that students have access to safe and comfortable living spaces.

Officials reported that under the SASKI program, infrastructure projects worth Rs 120 crore are currently underway. These initiatives include the installation of reverse osmosis (RO) water purification plants, construction of sanitation facilities, and other essential amenities in social welfare and tribal welfare schools.

Special Coaching and Academic Support

In a bid to nurture academic excellence, the government plans to establish dedicated coaching centers for meritorious students from SC, ST, BC, and minority communities. These centers will focus on preparing students for competitive examinations and higher education opportunities.

The state will also recruit highly qualified educators to provide specialized guidance and mentorship. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between government institution students and their peers in private coaching environments, ensuring equal opportunities for success in competitive arenas.

Community Engagement and Alumni Networks

The government is actively encouraging Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to adopt welfare hostels, fostering a sense of community involvement in educational development. Additionally, efforts will be made to strengthen alumni networks of hostels, gurukuls, and ashram schools, creating mentorship opportunities and support systems for current students.

Experts in education and healthcare sectors are being encouraged to volunteer their services, enriching the learning experience and overall well-being of students. This collaborative approach aims to bring diverse expertise into the educational ecosystem.

Holistic Welfare Schemes

The Chief Minister emphasized that welfare programs should extend beyond mere financial assistance. He called for a comprehensive approach that addresses students’ educational, skill development, and social growth. Schemes such as SASKI, Purodayam, and VB-G RAM G are being implemented with renewed focus and effectiveness.

In a notable development, officials informed the Chief Minister about the introduction of a smart card-based telephone system in hostels. This innovative facility allows students who miss their families to call their parents for up to four minutes daily, helping them stay connected and emotionally supported.

Economic Empowerment Initiatives

Beyond educational measures, the government is also focusing on economic upliftment of vulnerable communities. Naidu emphasized the need to promote horticultural crops, rubber, coffee, and turmeric cultivation to boost the income of farmers from weaker sections. These livelihood-related initiatives are designed to create sustainable economic opportunities.

The government has also implemented reservation for traditional toddy tappers in liquor shops, allocated quotas for Wadera communities in mines, and provided financial assistance to barbers, fishermen, and handloom workers. These measures reflect a comprehensive approach to social welfare and economic empowerment.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister directed officials to construct Anganwadi buildings under the VB-G RAM G scheme, strengthening early childhood education and care infrastructure across the state.

The dietary charge, which refers to the fee institutions collect for food, meals, or special nutrition, has been a crucial component of student welfare in residential educational facilities. The increase in these charges is expected to significantly improve the quality of meals served to students, contributing to their health, concentration, and academic performance.
