IAF and IIT Madras Join Forces for Indigenous Airborne Communication Systems

In a significant move toward defence self-reliance, the Indian Air Force’s Software Development Institute (SDI) and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras have formalised a partnership to design and develop an indigenous digital communication system tailored for airborne applications. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Air Vice Marshal R Guruhari, Commandant of SDI; Professor V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras; and Dr M J Shankar Raman, CEO of Pravartak Technologies Foundation.

This collaboration marks a strategic step in realising the vision of a self-reliant India, with the Air Force set to focus on developing advanced networking frameworks and encryption algorithms through this joint initiative.

The proposed system is designed to enable secure, reliable, and high-performance data exchange in airborne environments—a critical requirement in contemporary military operations. Professor V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, highlighted the collaboration as a prime example of productive synergy between academic institutions and defence organisations.
