Delhi University Gears Up for Landmark Year with New College and Major Infrastructure Push

The University of Delhi is set to witness a transformative phase in 2026, with the much-anticipated Veer Savarkar College slated to open its doors within the university’s western campus. This announcement came from Vice Chancellor Professor Yogesh Singh during a New Year dialogue program, where he outlined an ambitious roadmap for the institution’s growth and development over the coming months.

Massive Construction Drive Worth Over ₹2,000 Crore

Professor Singh revealed that construction projects exceeding ₹2,000 crore are currently underway across various university locations. A significant portion of these projects is expected to reach completion during 2026, marking a new chapter in the university’s physical expansion. The upcoming Veer Savarkar College represents just one component of this larger developmental vision.

Among the key structures nearing completion are multiple academic buildings, modern hostel facilities, and dedicated health center blocks. The university is also prioritizing the construction of the Faculty of Technology, a new women’s hostel, and substantial development work across both the eastern and western campus zones. These projects are progressing rapidly, with completion anticipated within the current calendar year.

Enhanced Campus Security and Digital Monitoring

In a significant move toward modernizing campus safety, the university administration has committed to installing CCTV surveillance across all locations. This comprehensive security upgrade aims to ensure complete monitoring of university premises, providing a safer environment for students, faculty, and staff alike.

Ongoing Academic Infrastructure Projects

The university’s expansion plans extend beyond the new college and hostels. Several other critical infrastructure initiatives are currently in progress, including:

  • A new building for the Institute of Home Economics (IOE)
  • Dedicated hostel accommodation for IOE students
  • A state-of-the-art computer center facility
  • Expansion of the central library to accommodate growing academic needs

These projects reflect the university’s commitment to enhancing both educational resources and student support services.

A Year of Achievements and Recognition

Reflecting on the past year, Professor Singh characterized 2025 as exceptionally productive for Delhi University, expressing confidence that 2026 would prove equally rewarding. He emphasized the university’s unique standing in the global educational landscape, noting that no institution worldwide quite matches DU’s scale and diversity.

The university has demonstrated strong performance in both national and international rankings. Notably, six colleges affiliated with Delhi University have secured positions among India’s top ten institutions. During the New Year program, the Vice Chancellor honored colleges that achieved outstanding results in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), celebrating their contributions to the university’s overall excellence.

Commitment to Excellence in 2026

Professor Singh urged all stakeholders to approach the new year with ambition and dedication, setting clear goals for further advancement. He stressed the importance of building upon past successes while exploring new opportunities for academic and institutional growth.

Administrative Milestones and Staff Development

University Registrar Dr. Vikas Gupta presented a comprehensive overview of administrative achievements during the program. The university has made remarkable progress in human resource development, completing 9,115 academic staff promotions across various colleges and departments as of December 31, 2025. Additionally, 5,037 academic appointments have been finalized, alongside 456 non-academic recruitments, demonstrating the institution’s commitment to strengthening its workforce.

Transparent Admissions Process

The university has significantly enhanced the transparency of its admissions procedure following the implementation of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET). The 2025 admission cycle witnessed substantial activity, with 72,229 students securing admission across 71,642 available seats. This near-complete seat utilization reflects the university’s continued popularity among aspiring students nationwide.

Future Academic Programs and Centers

Building on the momentum of new academic programs introduced last year, the university plans to launch additional courses in the coming years. In a notable development, approval has been granted for establishing a Center for Odia Studies, with expectations that central government funding and staffing approvals will materialize during 2026.

The gathering saw participation from key university officials including Dean of Colleges Professor Balram Pani, Southern Campus Director Professor Rajni Abbi, School of Open Learning Director Professor Payal Mago, along with various deans, directors, department heads, principals, and members of the Academic and Executive Councils.

With these comprehensive developments spanning infrastructure, academics, and administration, Delhi University is positioning itself for a landmark year that promises to reshape its campus landscape and enhance its educational offerings for years to come.
