NEP 2020 to Free New Generation from Macaulay’s Legacy, Says Union Minister

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has stated that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 will serve as the instrument to liberate India’s younger generation from the colonial mindset introduced by Thomas Macaulay. Speaking on Saturday, Pradhan emphasized that the policy aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of breaking free from outdated educational frameworks rooted in British-era thinking.

The NEP, which was unveiled on July 29, 2020, brings comprehensive reforms across multiple levels of education. Beyond restructuring school curricula, the policy introduces significant changes to higher education and technical training programs, aiming to create a more holistic and culturally rooted learning environment.

A Shift Away from Colonial Educational Ideals

During an interaction with reporters en route to an event, Pradhan explained that the NEP, now entering its sixth year, marks a fundamental transformation in how education is approached in India. He reiterated the Prime Minister’s stance on shedding the mental framework imposed during colonial rule.

“The Prime Minister has clearly stated that the nation must move beyond the Macaulay mindset. NEP 2020 will be the vehicle through which our new generation breaks free from this colonial influence,” Pradhan remarked.

The Minister further highlighted India’s demographic advantage, noting that with a predominantly young population, the education system carries the responsibility of preparing students through mother-tongue instruction, competency-based learning, and skill-oriented training. These approaches, he argued, would equip young people with practical abilities rather than rote memorization.

Encouraging Job Creators, Not Just Job Seekers

Pradhan advocated for a comprehensive evaluation system in education that encompasses academics, entrepreneurship, and innovation. He stressed that the goal should be to nurture young individuals who create employment opportunities rather than merely seek them.

“The National Education Policy is actively working toward this objective,” he stated, emphasizing the shift from traditional career paths to a more dynamic, innovation-driven approach.

The Minister’s comments reference a significant address delivered by Prime Minister Modi on November 17 during the sixth Ramnath Goenka Lecture in New Delhi. On that occasion, Modi called upon citizens to collectively resolve to rid the nation of the servile mentality perpetuated by Macaulay’s educational reforms.

Modi had noted that Macaulay’s actions against India’s cultural and educational foundations would complete 200 years in 2035. He urged the nation to commit to freeing itself from this imposed colonial mindset within the coming decade.

The NEP 2020 represents a deliberate departure from this legacy, emphasizing indigenous knowledge systems, flexible learning pathways, and the integration of vocational training at multiple stages. By prioritizing conceptual understanding over memorization and encouraging critical thinking, the policy aims to reshape India’s educational landscape to reflect contemporary needs while honoring cultural heritage.

As the policy completes its sixth year of implementation, educators and policymakers continue to work toward realizing its ambitious goals across schools, colleges, and technical institutions nationwide.
