Kerala Launches Statewide Robotics Training for Class 10 Students

In a significant move to integrate advanced technology into school education, Kerala’s technological education unit, Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE), has rolled out a comprehensive robotics training program for all Class 10 students across the state. The initiative, announced on Tuesday, marks a major milestone in modernizing the government school curriculum and preparing students for a tech-driven future.

Program Overview and Scale

The training initiative aims to benefit approximately 450,000 students enrolled in government and government-aided schools throughout Kerala. According to KITE’s Chief Executive Officer, K. Anvar Sadath, this large-scale program has been designed to provide students with hands-on experience in robotics and coding, equipping them with practical skills that extend beyond theoretical classroom learning.

All training sessions are scheduled to be completed by January 15, ensuring that students have ample time to absorb the material before their upcoming examinations. The program has been carefully aligned with the revised Information Technology textbook for Class 10, which now includes dedicated chapters on robotics fundamentals.

Little KITES Network Takes the Lead

The workshops are being organized under the guidance of Little KITES, recognized as the country’s largest student-led IT network. This peer-driven approach ensures that students learn in a comfortable and relatable environment, with trained student mentors leading the sessions alongside teacher coordinators.

The curriculum has been specifically crafted to help students prepare for their Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations, which will include questions on robotics and related topics this year. By connecting the training directly to the examination syllabus, KITE aims to make the learning process both meaningful and academically rewarding.

Two-Phase Training Structure

The robotics training program is structured into two distinct sessions, each focusing on different aspects of the subject:

Session One: Theoretical Foundations

The first session introduces students to the importance of robotics and its wide-ranging applications across various industries. Students receive comprehensive instruction on the fundamental components of robotic systems, including:

  • Input devices such as sensors
  • Processing units like microcontrollers
  • Output mechanisms including actuators

During this phase, students also gain practical familiarity with the robotic kits provided by KITE. These kits include essential components such as Arduino Uno boards, breadboards, and LEDs, allowing students to understand the physical building blocks of modern robotic systems.

Session Two: Hands-On Practical Training

The second session shifts focus entirely to practical application. Students learn block-based coding using PictoBlox software, a visual programming platform designed to make coding accessible to beginners. Through guided exercises, students practice programming LEDs to blink and controlling buzzers, developing foundational skills that can be built upon in higher grades.

Equipment Distribution and Implementation Strategy

To ensure effective learning outcomes, KITE has arranged for one robotic kit to be provided for every group of four to five students. This ratio allows for meaningful hands-on participation while ensuring that each student has the opportunity to engage directly with the equipment.

Schools that do not currently have an established Little KITES unit have been instructed to collaborate with neighboring institutions that do. This collaborative approach ensures that no school is left behind and that the benefits of the program reach every corner of the state, regardless of institutional resources.

The initiative represents a forward-thinking approach to education, positioning Kerala’s students at the forefront of technological literacy. By introducing robotics education at the secondary school level, KITE is laying the groundwork for a generation of students who are not just consumers of technology, but creators and innovators in their own right.
