Governor Stresses Dialogue with Parents of Students Involved in Exam Malpractices

Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel has called for a more compassionate and communicative approach when dealing with students caught using unfair means in examinations. Speaking at a high-level meeting at Raj Bhavan, the Governor emphasized that simply punishing students is not enough; instead, authorities must engage with their families to understand the root causes behind such behavior.

Patel suggested that parents of students found cheating should be invited for formal discussions. These conversations, she believes, would help officials and educators grasp the pressures and circumstances that drive young learners to resort to dishonest practices during exams. She described open dialogue as a powerful instrument for steering children back onto the right path.

University Presents Digital Exam Monitoring System

The meeting, chaired by the Governor, featured a detailed presentation by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University regarding its digital examination framework. University officials demonstrated how they have implemented a centralized command center that monitors examination halls in real time through CCTV cameras. The objective, they explained, is to maintain complete transparency, ensure fairness, and strengthen the overall security of the examination process.

Learning from Past Experiences in Gujarat

Drawing from her extensive tenure as a minister and later Chief Minister of Gujarat, Patel recounted how some students, upon receiving disappointing results in Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations, became so distressed that they contemplated self-harm. These incidents prompted her to take direct action. She personally reviewed answer sheets from affected students and discovered that many of them contained numerous blank pages.

In response, she had reached out to both students and their parents to understand what had gone wrong. She advised parents to take a more active role in their children’s academic lives—visiting schools regularly, discussing concerns with teachers, and motivating their children to stay focused on their studies. The Governor stressed that parental involvement is often the missing link in a student’s academic journey.

Need for Careful Answer Sheet Evaluation

Patel also turned her attention to the evaluation process, urging examining bodies to exercise greater diligence when assessing answer sheets. She emphasized that any errors found during evaluation should be clearly marked at the precise location where they occur. This practice, she noted, would allow students who apply for re-evaluation to understand exactly where they lost marks and what went wrong.

The Governor further highlighted the emotional sensitivity of parents regarding their children’s academic outcomes. Given how deeply results can affect families, she insisted that the entire assessment procedure must be handled with the utmost care and precision. She went a step further by recommending that financial penalties be imposed on evaluators found guilty of incorrect or negligent assessment. Such accountability measures, she argued, would serve as a deterrent and help maintain the integrity of the examination system.

Patel’s remarks underscore a growing recognition that examination reforms require not just technological upgrades but also a human touch. By combining robust monitoring systems with empathetic engagement with students and parents, the state aims to create an environment where academic integrity flourishes naturally rather than through fear of punishment alone.
