Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Rejects Kerala’s Move to Make Malayalam Compulsory in Kannada-Medium Schools

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has voiced strong opposition to the Kerala government’s recent decision to introduce Malayalam as a mandatory subject in Kannada-medium schools within the state. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, he asserted that no language should be forced upon linguistic minorities, emphasizing the need to respect and preserve all languages equally.

The controversy stems from a proposed legislation in Kerala that would require students in Kannada-medium institutions to study Malayalam. Siddaramaiah argued that while state legislatures hold the authority to pass laws, such actions must align with constitutional safeguards and the principles of linguistic diversity that India upholds.

“Language Cannot Be Imposed”

“They may have passed a law, but it cannot be implemented in that manner. You cannot impose a language on linguistic minorities,” Siddaramaiah stated firmly. He stressed that compelling speakers of other mother tongues to learn Malayalam alone is unacceptable and goes against the spirit of coexistence that defines the nation’s cultural fabric.

The Chief Minister warned that if the Kerala Governor grants assent to the proposed bill and it comes into effect, Karnataka would have no choice but to escalate the matter. “If this becomes law, the situation may force us to stage protests. We will also appeal to the central government and the President of India,” he added, hinting that the issue could be taken up at the national level.

Protecting Linguistic Minority Rights

Siddaramaiah underscored that India’s federal structure and constitutional framework are designed to shield linguistic minorities, particularly in border regions where communities have historically preserved their language and cultural identity. He cautioned that any attempt to dilute these protections would set a dangerous precedent for the entire country.

The remarks come amid growing political attention on language policies and education reforms in southern India, especially in states sharing linguistic borders. Officials in Karnataka have indicated that the state government will closely monitor developments in Kerala and respond through constitutional and democratic means.

State Government’s Stand on Pending Bills

When questioned about other administrative matters, Siddaramaiah addressed the status of pending bills awaiting the Governor’s approval in Karnataka. He confirmed that the state government is in the process of providing clarifications sought by the Governor on certain legislations. “The Governor has requested some explanations. The government is in the process of furnishing the necessary details,” he said, without specifying which bills were under discussion.

The Chief Minister’s remarks highlight the delicate balance between state autonomy and the protection of minority rights in India’s multilingual landscape. His stance reflects a broader concern among regional leaders about the potential ripple effects of language mandates on cross-border communities.

Observers note that the Kerala decision could have implications beyond the two states, as similar linguistic tensions exist in other parts of the country. The Karnataka government’s proactive stance signals its commitment to defending the interests of Kannada-speaking residents in neighboring states while also advocating for the rights of all linguistic groups within its own borders.

Siddaramaiah’s comments have reignited discussions on how states navigate language policies in a country where linguistic identity remains deeply intertwined with cultural and political sensibilities. As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on Kerala’s next steps and whether the proposed law withstands constitutional scrutiny.
