India Set to Host AI Impact Summit Next Month Under PM Modi’s Leadership

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan visited the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras on Wednesday to take part in the Pongal celebrations. During his visit, he announced that India will host the prestigious AI Impact Summit next month, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the helm. Speaking to the media, Pradhan highlighted how countries across the globe are rapidly adopting artificial intelligence in sectors such as education, healthcare, and manufacturing, and emphasised that India is emerging as a frontrunner in this transformative domain.

Preparations Underway for the Landmark Summit

Pradhan stated that the entire nation is gearing up for the event, with all sections of society and key stakeholders from government and industry coming together to deliberate on the effective deployment of AI across critical areas. He noted that sectors like education, agriculture, healthcare, logistics, and manufacturing are being closely examined for the integration of this revolutionary technology.

“Next month, under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India will host the esteemed AI Impact Summit. The whole country is preparing—the entire ecosystem, every segment of society, and all essential stakeholders in government and beyond are discussing how to implement a transformative technology like AI in areas such as education, agriculture, healthcare, logistics, and manufacturing. Last year, the Government of India established a Centre of Excellence for AI in Education, and we are committed to building on that foundation,” the Minister said.

He added that his visit to IIT Madras was aimed at reviewing the progress of this Centre of Excellence ahead of the upcoming summit.

Emphasis on Integrating AI into the Education System

Pradhan elaborated on the government’s decision to establish IIT Madras as a hub for the AI-focused Centre of Excellence. He explained that the education ecosystem—spanning central and state governments as well as institutions of all types—is now actively preparing to embed AI into curricula, teaching methodologies, and administrative frameworks.

“We have decided to set up the Centre of Excellence at IIT Madras as a hub. I am here today to review its progress in preparation for the AI Impact Summit. Our education system, whether at the central or provincial level, or in any type of institution, is now gearing up to adopt AI in its curriculum, pedagogy, and administrative systems,” he remarked.

Pongal: A Time for Renewed Commitment to Educational Transformation

Referring to the auspicious occasion of Pongal, the Education Minister noted that the new year symbolises a fresh resolve to integrate AI into India’s educational framework. He shared insights from a recent meeting with the governing councils of NIDSAR, all NITs, and ISR, where three key decisions were made to steer the future of Indian education.

  • Indian educational institutions will leverage AI to become more technology-driven in their teaching and learning approaches.
  • A new curriculum will be developed, keeping in mind the evolving global demands and workforce requirements.
  • Mother tongue will be prioritised as the medium of instruction from school level through to advanced research.

Focus on Research, National Priorities, and Regional Languages

The Minister elaborated on the importance of aligning research with national objectives. He urged the academic community to shift focus towards solving real-world problems and addressing national missions, rather than limiting research to academic publications alone.

“We are preparing numerous doctoral and PhD students every year. So far, the emphasis in Indian education has largely been on academic scholarship, scientific output, and quality research papers. But now, I appeal to the entire Indian education system to focus on problems, national priorities, and national missions. The third key decision we have made is to ensure that the medium of instruction and comprehension is the mother tongue across all Indian educational institutions. This will be given priority,” Pradhan stated.

Pongal: A Celebration of Gratitude and Unity

Pongal is a significant festival for the Tamil community, celebrated by Tamilians across the globe. It serves as an occasion to express gratitude and reverence towards nature, the sun, livestock, and farmers. The festival is traditionally observed with family and is regarded as a symbol of prosperity, brotherhood, and unity.

To make the festival more accessible and enjoyable, the Tamil Nadu government had earlier announced a Pongal gift package. This includes one kilogram of raw rice, one kilogram of sugar, and a sugarcane stalk for all eligible beneficiaries, ensuring that the spirit of the festival reaches every household.
