Delhi University Launches Drug-Free Campus Initiative

Delhi University has taken a significant step toward fostering a healthier academic environment with the official launch of its Drug-Free Campus campaign. The initiative, inaugurated by Vice President CP Radhakrishnan at the university’s multi-purpose hall in the Sports Complex, aims to create a substance-free atmosphere not just within the campus but across the entire nation.

Universities as Builders of Values

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Vice President Radhakrishnan emphasized that educational institutions serve a purpose far beyond academics. According to him, universities play a crucial role in shaping the moral and social fabric of young minds. He drew inspiration from ancient Indian scriptures, noting that the Vedas and Upanishads consistently advocate for restraint and a pure, balanced lifestyle.

Marking his first visit to Delhi University in this capacity, Radhakrishnan described the occasion as historic. He expressed confidence that the movement initiated here would ripple outward, eventually contributing to a drug-free India. The Vice President also launched a dedicated portal and mobile application designed to support the campaign’s objectives.

Addressing the Menace of Narcotics

Radhakrishnan did not mince words when discussing the dangers of the drug trade, drawing a direct connection between narcotics and terrorism. He called upon students, faculty, and society at large to stand united against this threat. The Vice President stressed that a drug-free youth population is essential not only for personal and economic growth but also for the nation’s long-term prosperity and stability.

Leaders Rally Behind the Cause

The event witnessed the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan as the distinguished guest, alongside Delhi’s Education Minister Ashish Sood. Pradhan delivered a powerful message to students, emphasizing that substance abuse destroys both health and future prospects. He encouraged those already struggling with addiction to come forward without hesitation.

“Seeking help is not a sign of weakness but a mark of wisdom,” Pradhan stated, reinforcing the importance of support systems within educational environments. He called for building a campus culture at Delhi University where student well-being takes center stage and where those in need feel empowered to access available assistance.

Ashish Sood echoed these sentiments, describing campuses as more than mere degree-granting institutions. He characterized them as foundational spaces for character development, where students learn values that will guide them throughout their lives.

A Collective Responsibility

The Drug-Free Campus campaign represents a collaborative effort between university administration, government bodies, and students. Key highlights of the initiative include:

  • A dedicated web portal and mobile application for reporting and support
  • Emphasis on creating a supportive campus culture prioritizing mental health and well-being
  • Recognition that addiction recovery requires compassion, not judgment
  • Commitment to extending the campaign’s impact beyond Delhi University to the national level

The launch marks the beginning of what officials hope will become a sustained movement against substance abuse in educational institutions across India. By positioning universities as arenas for value formation rather than purely academic spaces, the initiative seeks to address the root causes of drug addiction while providing practical solutions for those affected.

As the campaign gains momentum, the message from leaders is clear: a drug-free campus is not just an aspiration but a shared responsibility that requires active participation from every member of the academic community.
