Skills Outweigh Degrees in India’s Evolving Blue-Collar Job Market

India’s blue-collar and grey-collar recruitment landscape is undergoing a profound transformation. Employers are increasingly prioritizing practical skills, on-the-job readiness, and hands-on experience over formal academic qualifications. A recent report by the recruitment platform WorkIndia, titled “The Ascendance of Skills in Indian Blue-Collar Hiring,” reveals a striking trend: job postings now list “education below 10th grade” as the most preferred qualification across several key sectors. This marks a decisive shift away from traditional degree-based filtering toward a more skill-centric approach to hiring.

Understanding the Shift in India’s Labour Market

India’s workforce is navigating a period of significant change. According to Nilesh Dungarwal, co-founder and CEO of WorkIndia, employers are now placing greater trust in an applicant’s abilities, reliability, and readiness to perform from day one. “This transformation is making blue-collar hiring far more inclusive,” Dungarwal noted. “It is creating meaningful opportunities for millions of Indians who may not have formal education but possess the essential skills needed to power the nation’s economic engine.” The emphasis has moved from what a candidate has studied to what a candidate can actually do on the ground.

The Rise of Tier-II and Tier-III Cities in Recruitment

The geography of job creation is also expanding. While Delhi currently leads with 26 percent of all blue-collar job postings, demand is rapidly spreading to Tier-II and Tier-III cities. This decentralization signals that employment opportunities are no longer concentrated in metropolitan hubs alone. Workers in smaller towns now have access to local openings, making the job market more accessible across the country. The report is based on data and inputs from over 992,000 employers and more than 10.1 million workers registered on the platform during 2025.

Gender Trends Across Key Sectors

The report also sheds light on gender-based hiring patterns across various industries:

  • Delivery Sector: Male candidates continue to be the most preferred for delivery-related roles, reflecting the physical nature of the work and current workforce availability.
  • Telecalling: The telecalling sector leads the way in hiring female candidates, showcasing a growing acceptance and demand for women in front-line customer interaction roles.

These patterns make it clear that in high-volume and front-line roles, operational capability is the primary criterion driving recruitment decisions.

What to Expect in 2026

Looking ahead, WorkIndia predicts that as companies expand their operations in 2026, their focus will remain on speed, efficiency, and workforce flexibility. The emerging model of blue-collar hiring in India is not only dismantling traditional employment benchmarks but also opening new pathways for a skilled workforce. By removing the formal education barrier, a large segment of the population is being integrated into the mainstream economy. This shift is expected to accelerate, creating a more dynamic and inclusive labour market where talent and practical ability take centre stage.
