CBSE Warns Students Against Fake Universities Ahead of Admissions

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a fresh advisory urging students and parents to remain vigilant while seeking admission to higher education institutions. With the growing risk of fraudulent universities and unrecognised colleges, the board has shared a set of guidelines with all affiliated schools to prevent students from falling into academic traps.

These instructions have been issued in line with a recent communication from the University Grants Commission (UGC), which has consistently highlighted the dangers posed by unapproved institutions. The UGC updates a list of fake universities and non-recognised higher education institutes on its official platform every year. Students and their families are strongly encouraged to consult this list before making any admission-related decisions.

Why Early Awareness Matters for 2026-27 Admissions

As the admission cycle for the academic year 2026-27 is already underway, the board believes that timely awareness is critical. Many students, especially those appearing for Class 10 and Class 12 board exams, are at a stage where they are exploring options for higher studies. Without proper guidance, they may be misled by institutions that appear legitimate but lack official recognition.

Such mistakes can lead to serious consequences, including the loss of valuable time, financial resources, and future career opportunities. A degree from an unrecognised institution may hold no value in the job market or for higher education purposes, leaving students in a difficult position.

Schools Asked to Spread Awareness Among Students

CBSE has directed all affiliated schools to actively inform students and parents about the risks associated with fake universities. Schools are expected to educate Class 10 and Class 12 students specifically, as they are the ones preparing to transition to college or university life.

The board has recommended that students verify the accreditation status of any college or university through the UGC’s official portal. The process is simple and can be done by checking the relevant section on the UGC website that lists recognised higher education institutions and those that are not approved.

Key Steps Schools Should Take

To ensure the message reaches every student and guardian, CBSE has suggested that schools take the following steps:

  • Display important information about fake universities on school notice boards.
  • Publish relevant alerts and guidance on the school’s official website.
  • Discuss the issue during parent-teacher meetings to ensure families are well-informed.
  • Encourage students to always cross-check the recognition status of any institution before applying.

The board has emphasised that these measures are essential to safeguard students’ academic futures. By verifying institutional credentials in advance, students can ensure that they enrol only in recognised and reputable universities. This proactive approach will help them avoid the distress and complications that come with discovering too late that their chosen institution is not legitimate.

CBSE’s latest advisory serves as a timely reminder for students and parents to remain cautious and informed throughout the admission process. With the right checks and guidance, students can make safe and confident decisions about their higher education journey.
