Parakram Diwas 2026: Honoring Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose

Every year on January 23rd, India commemorates the birth anniversary of one of its most fearless freedom fighters, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The Government of India officially observes this day as Parakram Diwas, a tribute to his extraordinary courage and unwavering dedication to the nation’s independence. Unlike many of his contemporaries who advocated peaceful resistance, Bose championed armed struggle and boldly challenged British authority from foreign soil, making him a uniquely formidable figure in India’s fight for freedom.

Early Life and Family Roots

Subhas Chandra Bose was born on January 23, 1897, in Cuttack, which was then part of the Bengal Presidency and is now located in the modern state of Odisha. He grew up in a household steeped in discipline and strong moral values. His father, Janakinath Bose, was a highly respected lawyer, while his mother, Prabhavati Devi, was known for her deep religious faith and virtuous character. This nurturing environment played a significant role in shaping the principled and determined personality that would later define his leadership.

Academic Excellence and the ICS Decision

Bose displayed remarkable intellectual abilities from an early age. He completed his initial schooling in Cuttack before moving to Kolkata for higher education, where he studied at both Presidency College and Scottish Church College. His academic brilliance earned him the opportunity to sit for the prestigious Indian Civil Service (ICS) examination in England, which he successfully cleared in 1920.

Despite securing a position in this elite bureaucratic service, Bose found himself deeply conflicted. The idea of serving under the very government that was subjugating his motherland was intolerable to him. In a bold and historic move, he voluntarily resigned from the ICS, choosing instead to dedicate his life entirely to the cause of India’s liberation. This decision remains one of the most defining moments of his early career.

Rise Within the Freedom Movement

Upon returning to India, Bose immersed himself wholeheartedly in the independence movement. He quickly became a prominent figure within the Indian National Congress, rising through the ranks to serve as the party’s president on two separate occasions. However, ideological differences regarding strategy and approach created growing friction between Bose and the Congress leadership, particularly Mahatma Gandhi. Convinced that his vision for achieving freedom required a different path, Bose eventually parted ways with the mainstream party to pursue his own methods.

The Azad Hind Fauj and the Call to Delhi

During the tumultuous years of World War II, Bose executed a daring escape from India, traveling secretly through Afghanistan and Europe before reaching Germany and later Japan. In Southeast Asia, he took command of the Indian National Army, commonly known as the Azad Hind Fauj, reorganizing it into a formidable fighting force. His rallying cry of “Dilli Chalo” (March to Delhi) galvanized thousands of soldiers and civilians alike.

Bose also established the provisional government of Azad Hind and worked tirelessly to secure international recognition and support for India’s cause. Perhaps his most enduring legacy is the powerful slogan, “Tum mujhe khoon do, main tumhe azaadi dunga” (Give me blood, and I shall give you freedom), which continues to resonate as a symbol of supreme sacrifice and patriotism.

The Enduring Mystery of His Disappearance

The circumstances surrounding Bose’s death remain shrouded in uncertainty. Official accounts state that he perished in a plane crash in Taiwan on August 18, 1945, but this claim has never been universally accepted. Multiple government-appointed inquiry commissions have investigated the matter over the decades, yet no conclusive evidence has settled the debate. This unresolved mystery has only added to the legendary status of the man known affectionately as Netaji.
