IISc Bangalore to Offer B.Tech Admissions via JoSAA 2026

There is significant news for engineering aspirants preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) this year. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore has announced a major change in its undergraduate admission process. Starting from the academic year 2026-27, admission to its B.Tech programme will be conducted through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling. This decision is set to impact thousands of students aiming for a seat in one of India’s most prestigious research and education institutions.

Admission Process Aligned with JEE Advanced 2026

The official information regarding this change has been published on the JEE Advanced 2026 website. According to the announcement, IISc Bangalore has been added to the list of institutions participating in JoSAA 2026. This means that candidates will now be able to secure a place in the B.Tech programme at IISc based on their JEE Advanced 2026 rank through the centralised counselling process.

Previously, JoSAA was responsible for allocating seats in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other government-funded technical institutions. IISc was not a part of this system. With this new development, the institute has now opened its doors to the JoSAA framework, simplifying the admission journey for many students.

Undergraduate Courses Offered at IISc

IISc Bangalore currently offers two primary undergraduate programmes:

  • B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing
  • Bachelor of Science (Research)

Admission to the B.Tech course has traditionally been based on JEE Advanced scores. However, the B.S. Research programme follows a different route, with admissions granted through the IISER Aptitude Test score. The recent change specifically affects the B.Tech admission pathway, aligning it with the standard JoSAA counselling schedule.

Understanding JoSAA and Its Role

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority is a central body that manages the counselling and seat allocation process for undergraduate engineering programmes across the country. It operates for courses like B.E. and B.Tech, handling admissions strictly under the All India Quota. Only candidates who have appeared for JEE Main or JEE Advanced and have met the required cutoffs or secured a position in the merit list are eligible to participate in this process. The inclusion of IISc in this framework means that students will now have a single, streamlined platform for seat allocation across multiple top-tier institutions.

How B.Tech Admissions Worked Earlier

Up until 2025, IISc Bangalore managed its own B.Tech admission process. While the selection was still based on JEE Advanced scores, the procedure was separate from the centralised system. Candidates were required to visit the institute’s dedicated admission portal and complete a separate registration and selection process. This often meant additional paperwork and a different timeline for applicants. With the integration into JoSAA, the entire process will now be unified, offering a more straightforward experience for students who are already navigating multiple counselling rounds.

Important Dates for JEE 2026

For those planning to appear for the exams this year, keeping track of the schedule is crucial. Session 1 of JEE Main 2026 has already been conducted. Session 2 is scheduled to take place in April 2026. Following that, JEE Advanced 2026 is expected to be held on 17 May 2026. Registration for the advanced exam will begin on 23 April 2026, and candidates can complete their applications through the official JEE Advanced portal.

This update marks a significant step in making the admission process more accessible and efficient for engineering aspirants across India. By bringing IISc under the JoSAA umbrella, students now have a clearer and more unified path to one of the country’s leading science institutions.
