Education Sector Receives Major Boost in Union Budget 2026

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget 2026 in Parliament on February 1, placing significant emphasis on strengthening the country’s education infrastructure. The budget allocates substantial funds to key autonomous bodies under the Department of School Education and Literacy, with a clear focus on improving educational quality, upgrading facilities, and empowering academic institutions across the nation.

Key Allocations for Major Educational Institutions

The budget outlines generous funding for three of the most prominent educational organizations in the country. These allocations are designed to enhance the quality of education delivered through central schools, residential schools, and curriculum development bodies.

  • Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS): ₹10,129.41 crore
  • Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS): ₹6,025 crore
  • National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT): ₹681.79 crore

The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan receives the largest share among these institutions, reflecting the government’s commitment to providing quality education to children of central government employees and urban families. The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti also secures a substantial allocation, underscoring the administration’s dedication to rural education through its network of residential schools.

Comparative Analysis: Budget Growth Over Three Years

A closer examination of the budgetary trends over the past three fiscal years reveals consistent and healthy growth in funding for these educational bodies. The upward trajectory demonstrates the government’s sustained commitment to educational development.

Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS)

The budget for NVS has witnessed steady growth from ₹5,370.79 crore in the actual figures of 2024-25 to ₹5,750 crore in the 2025-26 budget, and now reaching ₹6,025 crore in the 2026-27 allocation. This progressive increase highlights the government’s growing focus on ensuring quality education reaches students in rural and semi-urban areas through the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya network.

Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS)

KVS has experienced the most significant budgetary expansion among the three organizations. From ₹8,727 crore in 2024-25, the allocation rose to ₹9,503.84 crore in 2025-26, and now stands at an impressive ₹10,129.41 crore for 2026-27. This substantial increase of over ₹1,400 crore in two years signals a robust commitment to strengthening the central school system that serves lakhs of students nationwide.

National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT)

NCERT’s budget has also shown consistent improvement, climbing from ₹517.42 crore in 2024-25 to ₹623.16 crore in 2025-26, and further to ₹681.79 crore in the current budget. This enhanced funding is expected to accelerate the development of textbooks, educational research, and learning materials, which form the backbone of the school education system.

Overall Education Budget Landscape

For the fiscal year 2026-27, the combined budget for all autonomous bodies under the education sector stands at ₹16,866.71 crore. This represents a notable increase from the previous year’s allocation of ₹15,907 crore, marking a growth of nearly ₹960 crore. The enhanced funding reflects the government’s recognition of education as a critical pillar for national development and its determination to build a stronger, more inclusive educational framework.

These budgetary allocations are expected to facilitate infrastructure improvements, teacher training programs, digital learning initiatives, and the overall modernization of educational delivery across the country. The consistent year-on-year increases across all three major institutions signal a long-term strategic vision for transforming India’s educational landscape and preparing students for the challenges of a rapidly evolving global economy.
