NEET UG 2026: Key Application Changes and Exam Details

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially released the notification for the NEET UG 2026 examination. With the aim of making the admission process more secure and transparent, several significant updates have been introduced to the registration system this year. Candidates preparing for the medical entrance test should carefully review the new protocols before submitting their applications.

Exam Date and Format

According to the official notification, NEET UG 2026 will be conducted on May 3, which falls on the first Sunday of the month. The examination will take place in a single shift across the country, with candidates required to appear from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Similar to previous years, the test will be administered in offline mode, using the traditional pen-and-paper format.

  • Exam date: May 3, 2026 (first Sunday of May)
  • Single shift examination nationwide
  • Timing: 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM
  • Mode: Offline (pen and paper based)

Registration Timeline and Deadlines

The application window for NEET UG 2026 is currently open. Interested candidates can complete their registration by visiting the official NTA portal. The final date for submitting applications is March 8. Along with the application form, candidates must also pay the requisite fee within the stipulated timeframe. It is important to note that incomplete applications or those submitted without the fee payment will not be considered valid.

Reasons Behind the New Regulations

The NTA has stated that these revised guidelines are being implemented to strengthen the credibility of the examination. In recent years, concerns regarding duplicate registrations, discrepancies in identity verification, and malpractice-related complaints have prompted the agency to adopt a more stringent approach. Under the new system, every candidate’s identity will undergo multiple layers of verification to ensure the examination is conducted fairly and without irregularities.

Mandatory Aadhaar-Based E-KYC

One of the most notable changes this year is the introduction of mandatory Aadhaar-based electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) verification for all applicants. Candidates must ensure that the mobile number linked to their Aadhaar card is active and accessible. The agency has advised applicants to check their mobile network connectivity before beginning the application process, as OTP-based confirmation will be required during the verification procedure.

Live Photo Capture Feature

Another significant modification in the NEET UG 2026 application involves the live photo capture facility. Candidates will now be required to take their photograph in real-time while filling out the form. The face must occupy approximately 80 percent of the frame and remain clearly visible throughout the image.

The NTA has issued specific instructions regarding the photo session. Applicants should avoid wearing caps, spectacles, or goggles when capturing the image, as this could interfere with the matching process against the Aadhaar database. For those who do not have access to a webcam, the system offers an alternative option to scan a QR code and use a mobile camera to upload the photograph.

  • Photograph must be captured in real-time
  • Face should occupy at least 80% of the frame
  • No caps, spectacles, or goggles allowed
  • QR code option available for mobile camera use
  • Photo will be cross-verified with Aadhaar records

Additionally, candidates are required to upload a passport-sized photograph, scanned signature, address proof, and other necessary documents during the application process. The live photo will be compared with the Aadhaar record to confirm the applicant’s identity.

Category-Wise Application Fees

The application fee structure for NEET UG 2026 varies according to the candidate’s category. General category applicants are required to pay Rs. 1,700. For candidates belonging to the General EWS and OBC-NCL categories, the fee is set at Rs. 1,600. Applicants from SC, ST, PwBD, and third-gender categories need to pay Rs. 1,000. For candidates applying from outside India, the application fee is Rs. 9,500.

  • General: Rs. 1,700
  • General EWS / OBC-NCL: Rs. 1,600
  • SC / ST / PwBD / Third Gender: Rs. 1,000
  • International candidates: Rs. 9,500

Exam City Allocation and Language Options

The allocation of exam cities will be determined based on the current and permanent addresses provided by candidates in their application forms. The examination center will be assigned accordingly, ensuring convenience for applicants.

NEET UG 2026 will be conducted in 13 different languages, offering flexibility to candidates from various linguistic backgrounds. The available languages include Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Persian, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.
