New Survey Highlights Growing Demand for Digital Safety Education in Schools

A recent survey has revealed that a significant majority of parents and educators believe internet safety should become a core component of school curricula. With more than 56 percent of respondents voicing this opinion, the findings underscore a growing recognition that digital literacy is now just as essential as traditional academic subjects.

The study, which gathered responses from 1,800 parents and 300 teachers, focused heavily on how artificial intelligence is reshaping the digital landscape and what that means for young learners. From the way children absorb information to how they interact with peers online, AI is leaving a profound mark on nearly every aspect of digital life, and adults are taking notice.

How Respondents Want Internet Safety Taught

When asked about the best approach to teaching internet safety, opinions were divided between two main strategies. A substantial portion of participants favored making it a standalone subject, while others suggested integrating it into existing coursework.

  • 32 percent of respondents called for internet safety to be taught as a separate subject with dedicated weekly classes.
  • 24 percent preferred weaving the topic into current subjects like computer studies, ensuring students encounter it regularly throughout the academic year.

This split reflects a broader debate about how to best prepare students for the challenges of an increasingly connected world. Both approaches, however, share a common goal: equipping children with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate online spaces safely and responsibly.

Digital Safety Is No Longer Optional

The vice chairman of the institution that commissioned the survey described the results as a wake-up call for the education system. He noted that today’s students are growing up in a digital environment vastly different from anything previous generations experienced. With AI transforming every corner of the internet, online safety has evolved from a nice-to-have skill into an absolute necessity.

Schools, he argued, carry a responsibility that extends far beyond textbooks and examinations. Educators must actively work to raise awareness and provide students with the tools they need to move through digital spaces with confidence and caution. The curriculum should prepare young people not only for the opportunities that lie ahead but also for the potential dangers that accompany them.

Top Online Concerns Among Parents and Teachers

The survey also shed light on the specific issues that worry adults most when it comes to children’s online activities. These concerns reflect the multifaceted nature of digital risks in the age of AI.

  • 34 percent of participants identified cyberbullying prevention and reporting mechanisms as their primary concern.
  • 29 percent prioritized protecting children from inappropriate content and online predators.
  • 22 percent emphasized the importance of safeguarding personal information and teaching responsible sharing practices.
  • 15 percent highlighted the need to manage screen time and prevent digital addiction.

These findings illustrate that the threats children face online are not limited to a single category. From social pressures to privacy breaches, the digital world presents a complex web of challenges that require comprehensive educational responses.

How Often Should Digital Safety Lessons Occur?

Beyond the question of how to teach internet safety, the survey explored how frequently such instruction should take place. Responses indicated that most adults believe regular, ongoing education is crucial rather than one-off sessions.

  • 42 percent of respondents supported holding digital safety sessions on a monthly basis.
  • 35 percent favored conducting programs once per academic term.
  • 16 percent suggested twice-yearly sessions.
  • Only 7 percent believed a single annual class would be sufficient.

The strong preference for frequent, recurring instruction suggests that parents and teachers view digital safety as an evolving topic that requires continuous reinforcement. As technology changes rapidly, so too must the guidance provided to students.

Levels of Concern and Readiness

The survey also measured how worried adults are about emerging online threats and how prepared they feel to address them. The results paint a picture of widespread anxiety paired with a recognition of personal limitations.

Forty percent of respondents described themselves as extremely concerned about students encountering inappropriate material and facing online safety risks. They characterized this as a daily worry that demands immediate action. Another 24 percent reported being moderately concerned about the same issues.

Perhaps most tellingly, only 12 percent of participants felt fully equipped to actively handle online safety concerns. The majority, comprising 51 percent, said they were somewhat prepared but acknowledged needing additional resources and training to feel confident. Twenty-nine percent admitted to feeling barely prepared at all, struggling to keep pace with rapidly evolving technology.

This gap between concern and readiness highlights a critical challenge facing schools and families alike. While awareness of digital risks is high, the capacity to address them effectively remains uneven. The findings suggest that meaningful investment in training, resources, and curriculum development will be essential to bridge this divide and ensure that students receive the protection and guidance they deserve in an increasingly digital world.
