CBSE Introduces Digital Answer Sheet Evaluation for Class 12 from 2026
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is set to modernize its examination assessment framework with a significant technological upgrade. Starting in 2026, answer sheets from Class 12 board examinations will be evaluated through an On-Screen Marking (OSM) system. This shift means that examiners will review and grade student responses digitally on computer monitors rather than handling physical copies. Importantly, the board has confirmed that Class 10 answer books will continue to be assessed using the traditional pen-and-paper method for the time being.
Why the Board Is Moving to Digital Evaluation
CBSE conducts board examinations for Classes 10 and 12 across India and in 26 other countries, with nearly 4.6 million students appearing each year. Managing the evaluation of such a massive volume of answer sheets has always been a logistical challenge. The introduction of the OSM system is aimed at making the entire process smoother, faster, and more transparent. By digitizing the workflow, the board expects to reduce the administrative burden while improving accuracy in scoring.
Understanding the On-Screen Marking System
On-Screen Marking is a fully digital evaluation method. Here is how it works: student answer books are first scanned and uploaded to a secure online platform. Examiners then log in using their credentials on a computer or laptop and assess the scanned responses directly on their screens, assigning marks digitally. This approach eliminates the need to physically transport bundles of answer sheets from one location to another, which significantly cuts down on processing time and minimizes the risk of documents being lost or delayed.
In an official circular released on February 9, CBSE stated that this system will help reduce common errors and delays that are typically associated with manual checking. The board believes that digital evaluation will bring a new level of efficiency to the examination cycle.
Key Benefits of the New Evaluation Method
The shift to On-Screen Marking brings with it a host of advantages for students, teachers, and the board alike. Some of the most notable benefits include:

Technical Requirements for Schools
To ensure the smooth implementation of the On-Screen Marking system, CBSE has instructed schools to have certain digital infrastructure ready. These requirements are designed to support a seamless online evaluation experience:
- A computer lab equipped with a public static IP address.
- Computers or laptops running Windows OS version 8 or higher, with at least 4GB of RAM and 1GB of free storage space.
- Updated internet browsers such as Chrome, Edge, or Firefox.
- Adobe Reader software installed for viewing scanned documents.
- A stable internet connection with a minimum speed of 2 Mbps.
- Uninterrupted power supply to avoid any disruption during the marking sessions.
The board has noted that most of these facilities are already part of the standard CBSE affiliation guidelines. Additionally, teachers who have a valid OASIS ID will be given the opportunity to log in to the system in advance and familiarize themselves with the interface before the actual evaluation begins.
Training, Trials, and Technical Support
Recognizing that any major change requires proper preparation, CBSE has outlined a comprehensive plan to support teachers and schools during this transition. Multiple dry runs will be conducted to test the system and identify any potential issues before they affect the real evaluation process. The board will also organize training programs and provide instructional videos to help teachers understand the new workflow.
Furthermore, a dedicated call center will be established to address any technical difficulties that examiners might encounter while using the OSM platform. This support system is expected to ensure that the transition to digital marking, beginning in 2026, is carried out smoothly and without major disruptions.
Exam Schedule for 2026
According to the official date sheet released by CBSE, the board examinations for 2026 are scheduled to commence on February 17. The Class 10 examinations will conclude on March 11, while the Class 12 examinations will continue until April 10. It is during this examination cycle that the Class 12 answer sheets will be evaluated using the new digital method, marking the beginning of a new era in CBSE’s assessment system.
