Delhi Government Schools to Receive 21,000 Smart Boards and 7,000 Computers
Delhi’s government-run schools are set to undergo a major digital transformation over the coming years. The education department has outlined an ambitious plan to equip classrooms with modern technology, aiming to enhance the learning experience for thousands of students across the capital.
Smart Boards to Reach 21,000 Classrooms
Under the new initiative, the Delhi government will install smart boards in 21,000 classrooms over the next four years. These interactive panels are expected to make lessons more engaging and help students grasp complex concepts with greater ease. Each smart board will come with a five-year maintenance guarantee, ensuring long-term reliability and minimal disruption to teaching activities.
The rollout will initially focus on classrooms catering to students from Class 9 to Class 12. Tenders for 7,000 smart boards have already been finalized, marking the first phase of this large-scale deployment. The eventual goal is to have a smart board in every classroom of every government school in Delhi, a move that will significantly modernize the teaching environment.
ICT Labs to Get a Major Boost with New Computers
In parallel with the smart board initiative, the government is also strengthening its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure. As many as 175 ICT labs across the city will receive a total of 7,000 new computers before the end of March. This timely upgrade is intended to equip students with essential digital skills that are increasingly vital for academic and professional success.
Education Minister Ashish Sood highlighted the importance of computer literacy, noting that major competitive examinations such as NEET, CUET, and CLAT now require a solid grasp of computer-based testing formats. He pointed out that many students do not have access to a computer at home, making school labs their primary—and often only—resource for building this crucial competency.
Progress and Partnerships in Digital Education
The government has already supplied more than 7,000 new computers to Delhi’s schools in under a year. With over 1,000 government schools operating in the city, the administration is working toward ensuring that every single one of them has a fully functional ICT lab within the next three years.
In a notable public-private collaboration, the Ladli Foundation has contributed significantly to this cause. The foundation has donated 2,000 computers to 100 ICT labs so far, with a commitment to provide an additional 1,500 computers to 75 more labs in the near future. These labs are being designed with a dedicated computer and an individual UPS unit on every workstation, allowing for uninterrupted, hands-on practice for each student.
Beyond computers and smart boards, the government is also investing in digital reading resources. More than 100 digital libraries are being established in government schools this year, further broadening students’ access to knowledge and learning materials.
These combined efforts reflect a strong push to bridge the digital divide and ensure that students in Delhi’s public education system are well-prepared to thrive in a technology-driven world.
