India’s AI Vision: Inclusive by Design, Sovereign by Capability
India’s approach to artificial intelligence is set to be defined by inclusivity, interoperability, and national strength, according to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Speaking at the inaugural session of the Bharat Bodhan AI Conclave 2026, Pradhan outlined a clear roadmap for embedding AI into the country’s educational framework while ensuring that the technology remains rooted in India’s own priorities and values.
The two-day conclave brought together senior officials from central and state governments, researchers, academics, and industry leaders. The central theme of the gathering was how AI can drive innovation, widespread adoption, and capacity building across India’s education sector. The discussions focused on practical strategies to integrate AI into classrooms, research environments, and administrative systems without compromising on ethical standards or accessibility.
Age-Appropriate AI Learning for Every Student
Pradhan emphasized that India’s AI ecosystem must be built on three foundational pillars: inclusivity in design, interoperability in architecture, and sovereignty in capability. He called upon all stakeholders to collaborate in developing scalable, responsible, and ethical AI models that are distinctly Indian in their approach and aligned with the nation’s developmental goals.
“We must integrate AI into education to empower our students and support our teachers,” Pradhan said. “I urge all stakeholders to work together in creating sovereign AI models that are scalable, responsible, ethical, inclusive, and centered on India’s unique context.”
With over 300 million students enrolled in Indian colleges and schools, the minister announced a structured plan to introduce age-appropriate AI knowledge starting from Class 3 and extending through advanced research levels. This tiered approach aims to build foundational awareness early while progressively developing deeper technical expertise as students advance.
AI Beyond Technology: A Holistic National Priority
The minister stressed that AI is not merely a technological issue but a comprehensive national concern that touches every aspect of society and the economy. He argued that if India can successfully combine machine intelligence with human emotional understanding, it could emerge as a global powerhouse in AI development and application.
“I believe every student will need AI literacy in the coming years,” Pradhan noted. “If we can create models that blend machine capabilities with emotional intelligence and develop the right architecture, we can become a formidable force on the world stage.”
The conclave also set the stage for the larger India AI Summit scheduled to take place in the national capital from February 16 to 20. That event is expected to feature participation from some of the most prominent global technology leaders, including the CEOs of major AI and semiconductor companies. The summit aims to further cement India’s position as a serious player in the global AI landscape, with a focus on homegrown solutions and international collaboration.
Pradhan’s remarks reflect a broader governmental push to position India not just as a consumer of AI technologies but as a creator and leader in the field. By prioritizing education as the entry point, the strategy seeks to build a generation of Indians who are not only proficient in using AI tools but also capable of designing and developing AI systems that serve national interests while meeting global standards.
The emphasis on sovereignty in AI capabilities signals a clear intent to reduce dependency on foreign technologies and frameworks. At the same time, the call for interoperability suggests a pragmatic recognition that India’s AI systems must be able to work seamlessly with global platforms and standards. This balanced approach aims to foster innovation while maintaining strategic autonomy in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
