CBSE Releases Guidelines for Class 12 Private Students Appearing in Practical Exams 2026

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued an official notification outlining the framework for Class 12 practical board examinations scheduled for 2026. As per the directive, these examinations will take place between February 23 and March 17, 2026, specifically catering to private candidates who need to appear for practical components.

Rules for Subjects Without Practical Components

For subjects that do not include a practical examination component, the board has established a clear procedure. In such cases, there will be no separate project work or internal assessment conducted. Instead, the marks allocated for project work or internal assessment will be calculated proportionally based on the student’s performance in the theory examination. This ensures that students are not disadvantaged by the absence of a practical element in certain subjects.

Instructions for Affiliated Schools

CBSE has communicated specific responsibilities to its affiliated schools to ensure smooth conduct of the examinations. Schools must ensure that internal examiners are available for the duration of the practical exams. In situations where a school lacks a qualified teacher for a particular subject, the institution is required to arrange for a competent educator from a nearby CBSE-affiliated school to serve as the examiner.

The board has also emphasized the proper handling of answer booklets. Schools are instructed to exclusively use the practical answer booklets provided by their respective regional offices. Examiners have been directed to fill in all necessary details in these booklets with precision and care to avoid any discrepancies.

Examination Centers and Examiner Appointments

According to the official CBSE notice, practical examinations will be conducted at the same examination centers or schools designated for the theory papers. This uniformity helps students navigate the examination process more conveniently.

The appointment of examiners follows a structured approach. Regional directors or designated officers will be responsible for appointing external examiners for all students. Meanwhile, the center superintendent will select internal examiners from among the teaching staff of their own school. This dual-examiner system is designed to maintain fairness and transparency in the evaluation process.

Eligibility Criteria for Students

The guidelines specify which categories of students are eligible to appear for the practical examinations in the 2026-27 academic session:

  • Students who appeared for Class 12 practical exams in 2025 or 2024 but whose marks are unavailable due to re-examination requirements, absenteeism, or other legitimate reasons may register for the upcoming practical exams.
  • Candidates from 2023 or earlier who have applied under the private category with all required subjects are also eligible to sit for their respective practical examinations.

This inclusive approach ensures that students who faced challenges in previous attempts get a fair opportunity to complete their practical assessments and progress academically. The board’s detailed guidelines aim to streamline the entire process while maintaining rigorous standards for all stakeholders involved.
