CBSE Introduces AI-Powered Digital Evaluation for Class 10 Answer Sheets
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a significant shift in how board examination answer sheets will be assessed. Starting with the current Class 10 board exams, the board will implement a digital evaluation system powered by artificial intelligence (AI). This move aims to enhance accuracy in marking and eliminate inconsistencies often associated with manual evaluation.
AI Evaluation Proves More Accurate Than Manual Checking
According to official data, AI-driven assessment achieves an accuracy rate of approximately 95 percent, compared to 92 percent when answer sheets are evaluated by human examiners. This marginal yet meaningful difference translates into fewer errors and fairer outcomes for students. The board believes that automated checking will significantly reduce the likelihood of mistakes, ensuring that deserving candidates receive the marks they have earned.
Educational Institutions Testing and Adopting Digital Assessment
Several premier institutions, including IITs, NITs, and other technical universities, are currently piloting digital evaluation methods in small groups before full-scale implementation. The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Bangalore has already integrated this system into its assessment process. Similarly, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has begun using digital evaluation for major entrance examinations such as JEE Main, NEET, and CUET, along with other national-level admission tests. The primary objective across all these initiatives is to identify correct answers accurately and award marks accordingly, minimizing human oversight.
AI Summit Highlights Transformation in Education
At the recent India AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam, experts showcased how artificial intelligence is reshaping the educational landscape. Discussions centered on moving beyond traditional human-dependent evaluation methods toward more robust digital frameworks for both school and higher education. Following CBSE’s announcement, a nationwide debate has emerged regarding the implications of digital assessment. While some stakeholders express concern that AI could threaten teaching jobs, others welcome the change as a progressive step toward modernization and objectivity in examinations.
Addressing the Challenge of Poor Handwriting
One of the most significant advantages of AI-based evaluation is its ability to interpret messy or illegible handwriting. Tomesh Jain, head of Codekendra, the organization behind this evaluation technology, explains that students with neat handwriting have historically enjoyed an advantage, as examiners could easily read and reward their responses. Conversely, students with less legible handwriting often lost marks simply because evaluators struggled to understand their answers, despite the content being correct.
This discrepancy has long been a source of frustration for students and parents alike. Research indicates that examiner behavior also plays a role in marking variability. Some teachers are lenient and award good marks even when answers are written differently or untidily, while others deduct marks for the same reasons. With AI-powered evaluation, such subjective factors will no longer influence outcomes. The technology is designed to comprehend poorly written answers and unconventional response styles, ensuring that every student is judged purely on the merit of their knowledge and understanding.
Two-Stage Evaluation Process Ensures Fairness
The new system will operate through a dual-stage evaluation process. Initially, AI will digitally assess the answer sheets. Following this, human teachers will review the AI-generated marks. If an examiner reduces a student’s score, the AI system will flag this change and raise a query if it detects that the deduction appears unjustified. This built-in check-and-balance mechanism ensures transparency and protects students from arbitrary deductions.
The digital evaluation framework is versatile and can handle both online computer-based tests and traditional pen-and-paper answer sheets. This flexibility means that regardless of the examination format, the benefits of AI assessment can be applied uniformly.
As CBSE takes this pioneering step, the focus remains on creating a more equitable and reliable examination system. By leveraging technology to eliminate biases and errors, the board aims to restore confidence in the evaluation process and ensure that hard-working students receive the recognition they deserve.
