Punjab University Vice Chancellor Removed Over Alleged Mistreatment of Kashmiri Students

In a significant administrative action, the vice chancellor of a private university in Punjab has been dismissed following allegations of misconduct toward Kashmiri Muslim students. The controversy erupted after students reportedly faced hostility when requesting special meal arrangements during the holy month of Ramadan.

Allegations of Misconduct at CT University

The vice chancellor of CT University in Jagraon, Punjab, was removed from his position after being accused of using abusive language and issuing threats against Kashmiri students. The students had approached the administration seeking proper facilities for sehri (the pre-dawn meal) and iftar (the evening meal to break the fast) during Ramadan.

According to student accounts, when they raised their concerns about the mess arrangements, they were met with hostile behavior. The students further alleged that they were threatened with hostel eviction and cancellation of their admissions if they continued to press the issue.

Administration Steps In to Defuse Tension

The situation escalated to a point where district authorities had to intervene. Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain confirmed that the administration coordinated with police officials and community leaders to restore calm on campus. Following the intervention, an official inquiry was ordered, and the university management subsequently removed Vice Chancellor Nitin Tandon from his post.

The controversy gained wider attention when Iltija Mufti, daughter of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, brought the matter to the notice of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann through social media. She demanded appropriate action against the university officials involved.

Community Leaders Help Resolve the Dispute

Deputy Commissioner Jain revealed that local authorities worked alongside Shahi Imam Maulana Mohammad Usman Rahmani Ludhianvi to resolve the matter amicably. The coordinated efforts of the administration and community representatives helped de-escalate the situation and restore normalcy on the campus.

The deputy commissioner expressed gratitude toward the university management for maintaining peace and addressing the issue through constructive dialogue rather than confrontation.

University Launches Internal Investigation

Charanjit Singh Channi, the Chancellor of CT University, confirmed on Tuesday that an internal investigation has been initiated into the incident. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure no further complications arise.

Speaking about the developments, Channi stated that the vice chancellor was asked to tender his resignation, which he submitted. He noted that the altercation between students and the vice chancellor began over food arrangements and escalated into a heated argument, after which students locked the mess facility as a form of protest. Following the vice chancellor’s departure, the student demonstration was called off.

Background of the Dispute

The conflict emerged when Kashmiri students at the university claimed they were denied adequate provisions for their religious dietary requirements during Ramadan. The students maintained that the university mess failed to provide appropriate meals at the required times, which they considered essential to their religious observance.

The families of affected students grew increasingly concerned as news of the incident spread. The university community and local residents alike watched closely as the situation developed, with many calling for accountability and transparency in how such matters are handled at educational institutions.

The removal of the vice chancellor marks a decisive step in addressing the grievances raised by the students and signals the university administration’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment for students from diverse backgrounds. The resolution of this dispute through dialogue and administrative action rather than prolonged conflict has been viewed positively by those involved.

Authorities have emphasized the importance of maintaining communal harmony and ensuring that all students, regardless of their regional or religious background, feel safe and respected within academic institutions. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for sensitivity toward cultural and religious practices in educational settings across the country.
