Urgent Call to Evacuate Nearly 1,200 Kashmiri Students Stranded in Iran
Amid escalating military tensions in West Asia, the Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association (JKSA) has formally appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to facilitate the immediate evacuation of approximately 1,200 Kashmiri students currently trapped in Iran. The request comes in the wake of recent airstrikes carried out by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets, which have significantly heightened security concerns across the region.
Growing Anxiety Among Students and Families Back Home
Nasir Khuehami, the national coordinator of JKSA, raised the alarm while speaking to a news agency, highlighting the deep distress experienced by Indian students and citizens residing in Iran following the outbreak of hostilities. He noted that families in the Kashmir Valley, in particular, are gripped by fear and worry as they await news of their loved ones.
According to Khuehami, there are roughly 3,000 Indian students enrolled in Iranian institutions, with nearly 2,000 hailing from Kashmir. Of that number, an estimated 1,100 to 1,200 students remain on the ground, many of whom are eager to return to India at the earliest opportunity. The prolonged uncertainty has left both students and their relatives in a state of heightened anxiety.
Demand for a Comprehensive Evacuation Mission
In his letter to the Prime Minister, Khuehami urged the central government to launch a large-scale evacuation operation to bring all stranded Indian nationals back safely. He further stressed the need for immediate diplomatic engagement, calling on New Delhi to take up the matter with Iranian authorities and ensure the protection of Indian students amid the volatile situation.
The appeal underscores the growing urgency felt by student organisations, who believe that a timely and coordinated response is essential to prevent any humanitarian crisis from unfolding in the conflict zone.
Karnataka Government Expresses Solidarity and Concern
The escalating conflict has also drawn responses from state governments. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has expressed concern over the safety of Indian nationals living across West Asia. In a statement shared on social media, he revealed that he had spoken with the state’s resident commissioner in New Delhi to assess the situation and coordinate necessary measures.
The Chief Minister emphasised that the Karnataka government is closely monitoring developments in countries such as Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, and Qatar, where a significant number of Kannada-speaking individuals reside. He has directed officials to take proactive and necessary steps to ensure the well-being of these communities during this period of regional instability.
Rising Military Tensions Disrupt Regional Air Travel
The backdrop to these diplomatic and humanitarian appeals is a sharp escalation in military activity. Israel and the United States have conducted strikes on Iranian positions, prompting retaliatory actions from Tehran, including reported attacks on American military installations in the area. The exchange of fire has raised fears of a wider conflict engulfing the region.
As a result, several parts of West Asia have witnessed temporary closures of airspace, severely disrupting international flight operations. Numerous airlines have been compelled to reroute or reassess their existing flight paths, as many corridors pass through or near the affected zones. The uncertainty in air travel has added another layer of complexity to evacuation efforts, making logistical coordination all the more challenging.

With the situation remaining fluid and unpredictable, Indian students in Iran and their families are looking to the central government for rapid intervention. Student bodies are pressing for immediate measures to ensure that all citizens stranded in the conflict-affected country are brought home without delay. The coming days are likely to be critical as authorities weigh options for safe passage and diplomatic negotiations continue behind the scenes.
