CBSE Announces Guidelines for Class 10 Second Board Exam 2026
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially released important details regarding the second board examination for Class 10 students, scheduled for 2026. Along with the examination framework, the board has also published the timeline and procedural requirements for schools to submit the List of Candidates (LOC). This new initiative is designed to give students an additional opportunity to enhance their academic performance.
Under the revised system, students who are not satisfied with their initial results will now have the chance to reappear for examinations in up to three subjects. These improvement exams are scheduled to take place in May 2026. The primary objective of this move is to alleviate examination-related stress among students while offering them a genuine opportunity to achieve better scores.
LOC Submission Schedule in Three Phases
The CBSE has structured the LOC submission process into three distinct phases, allowing schools adequate time to complete the necessary formalities:
- First Phase: March 18 to March 31, 2026
- Second Phase: A five-day window immediately following the announcement of results
- Third Phase: A two-day late fee window, commencing seven days after the results are declared
Schools must ensure that all online fee payments and related procedures are completed within the designated timeframe for each phase. Importantly, no applications will be accepted after midnight on the final day of each submission window.
Examination Fees and Late Charges
The board has established a clear fee structure for the second examination, varying according to the student’s location:
- Students in India: ₹320 per subject (₹960 for three subjects)
- Students in Nepal: ₹1,100 per subject
- Students in other countries: ₹2,200 per subject
In cases where schools or students miss the stipulated deadlines, a late fee of ₹2,000 will be applicable. This penalty applies regardless of the number of subjects being attempted.
Important Instructions for Schools and Students
CBSE has issued explicit directives to school principals regarding the dissemination of information about this new examination system. Schools are expected to thoroughly educate both students and their parents about the eligibility criteria and the potential benefits of appearing for the second examination.
The board has also indicated that examination centers for this session may be limited in number. Consequently, some students might need to travel to nearby cities or towns to appear for their exams. Schools have been instructed to share all relevant details with students well in advance to avoid any last-minute confusion or inconvenience.
Eligibility Criteria for the Second Board Examination
To be considered eligible for the Class 10 second board examination, students must fulfill the following conditions as specified by CBSE:
- The student must have appeared for at least three subjects in the first board examination
- Candidates must have passed Class 10 to be eligible for the improvement examination
- Students falling under the compartment category are eligible to apply
- Those who passed through the sixth subject option are also permitted to apply
- Students categorized under UFM Category-1 (unfair means) may be eligible, provided they meet all other requirements
- Candidates who received a compartment in the 2025 examination can also participate
Provisions for Improvement and Compartment Examinations
The board has outlined specific provisions regarding which students can appear for improvement exams and under what circumstances:
- Students may appear for improvement examinations in a maximum of three core subjects, including Science, Mathematics, Social Science, and languages
- Those with first or third chance compartment status are eligible to apply
- Students have the option to appear for both compartment and improvement examinations
- Candidates who passed after changing their subject are also allowed to take the improvement exam
- Students recognized under the sports category, with prior board approval, are eligible as well
Students Who Are Not Eligible
CBSE has also clearly defined the categories of students who will not be permitted to appear for the second board examination:
- Students who did not participate in at least three subjects during the first examination
- Those who failed in three or more subjects in the initial examination
- Candidates falling under the ER (Essential Repeat) category are not eligible for this examination and must instead appear for the main examination in the following academic year
