CBSE Announces Alternative Assessment Plan for Class 10 Students in West Asia
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially cancelled the Class 10 board examinations across West Asia due to the deteriorating security situation in the region. In place of the standard exam format, the board has introduced a special assessment scheme that will determine students’ final results. This decision brings clarity and relief to thousands of students who were uncertain about their academic future after the sudden cancellation of exams.
Reason Behind the Exam Cancellation
Escalating tensions between Israel, the United States, and Iran have raised serious concerns about safety and stability throughout West Asia. Considering these circumstances, CBSE initially postponed both Class 10 and Class 12 examinations in the affected areas. However, as conditions continued to worsen, the board made the decisive call to cancel all Class 10 exams entirely. This move directly impacts students studying in CBSE-affiliated schools across Bahrain, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Examinations Already Completed
Before the cancellation was announced, a number of examinations had already been conducted successfully between February 17 and February 28, 2026. These included six academic subjects such as Mathematics, English, and Science, along with sixteen language papers and twenty-two skill-based subjects. Students who appeared for these exams will have their performance in these papers factored into their final assessment.
How Results Will Be Calculated
The board has outlined a transparent and structured formula for preparing student results. The evaluation will primarily depend on how many examinations each student managed to appear for before the cancellation. Students have been divided into several categories based on their exam attendance, and each category follows a specific calculation method.
Students Who Appeared for All Examinations
Those who successfully sat for every scheduled examination will have their results computed directly from their actual performance. Their marks across all subjects will be totaled to determine their final outcome without any adjustments.
Students Who Appeared for Four Examinations
For students who managed to appear in four examinations, the board will calculate the average marks from the three best-performing subjects among those where exams were not held. This average will then be applied to the remaining subjects to generate a complete result.
Students Who Appeared for Three Examinations
In cases where students attended only three examinations, the average score from the two best-performing subjects will be used to calculate marks for the subjects that were not examined. This ensures that students are not penalized for circumstances beyond their control.
Students Who Appeared for Two Examinations
For students who could only appear in two examinations, the results for the remaining subjects will be based on the average of those two completed papers. This approach provides a fair assessment despite the limited examination data available.
Students Registered in 2025 or Earlier
Students who registered in 2025 or earlier and appeared for one or two of their scheduled examinations will have their results based on their actual performance in those papers. If any examinations remain incomplete, these students will be given the opportunity to sit for them during the next board examination cycle.
Special Provisions for Students Who Changed Exam Centers
Some students had already relocated to different cities or countries and changed their examination centers before the cancellation was announced. For these students, results will be prepared based on the marks they earned in the examinations they did complete. The board has explicitly stated that changing examination centers will have no negative impact on a student’s final result.
Result Declaration Timeline
All students from the West Asia region will receive their results at the same time as students from other parts of the country. There will be no separate or delayed announcement for these students. The results will be published according to the board’s standard schedule, ensuring that all Class 10 students across the globe receive their outcomes simultaneously.
Opportunity for Score Improvement
CBSE has also made provisions for students who wish to enhance their scores. Any student who is dissatisfied with their assessed marks or simply wants to attempt better performance can appear for the next board examination. This improvement opportunity ensures that students are not permanently bound to their assessment-based results if they believe they can achieve higher marks through formal examination.
Internal Assessment Guidelines
Internal assessment, which is a year-long evaluation process conducted by schools, has already been completed for all students. This component includes class performance, practical work, projects, and other continuous evaluation metrics. The board has confirmed that only the internal assessment marks uploaded by schools will be considered valid for the final result calculation. Schools must ensure that all internal assessment data has been properly submitted to the board.
Finality of Results
Results prepared under this special assessment scheme will be considered final and binding. The board has clarified that no additional examinations will be conducted for Class 10 students in the affected regions, except in extraordinary circumstances where a competent board authority makes a specific exception. Students and parents should treat the assessment-based results as the definitive outcome for the current academic session.
Class 12 Assessment Plan
For Class 12 students, a separate evaluation scheme is currently being developed. The board has indicated that details regarding the Class 12 assessment formula will be communicated at a later date. These students will receive their own set of guidelines and calculation methods once the board finalizes its approach for the higher secondary level.
The announcement provides much-needed certainty for students and families across West Asia who have been navigating an anxious period.
