Government Cracks Down on Misleading Ads by Coaching Centres

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has confirmed that the government is taking strict action against coaching centres that publish deceptive advertisements. Responding to supplementary questions during Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, Joshi stated that multiple notices have been issued to such institutes and penalties have been imposed for misleading promotional content.

Protecting Students from False Promises

The Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution emphasised that the primary objective behind this crackdown is to safeguard the interests of students and their families. Many coaching centres have been accused of making exaggerated claims about success rates, selection numbers, and placement outcomes to attract enrolments. Such practices, Joshi noted, often trap young learners in a web of unrealistic expectations.

The government has made it clear that consumer protection laws apply fully to the education sector. Any institution found guilty of disseminating false information or making unsubstantiated claims will face consequences. According to Joshi, the recent measures have already led to a noticeable decline in such cases, reflecting the effectiveness of ongoing regulatory efforts.

Action Taken Against Erring Institutes

Several coaching centres across the country have received formal notices for violating advertising norms. In addition to these warnings, monetary fines have been levied on those found flouting the rules. The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that students receive accurate and honest information before making decisions about their academic future.

Joshi also highlighted that the crackdown is part of a broader consumer protection initiative. By holding coaching centres accountable for their claims, the authorities aim to create a more transparent and trustworthy educational ecosystem. The minister assured that surveillance would continue and that stricter measures would be introduced if required.

Parliament Pays Tribute to Late Leader

Before the day’s proceedings began, members of the Lok Sabha paid homage to Kavuru Sambasiva Rao, who passed away the previous week. Lawmakers observed a moment of silence as a mark of respect for the departed leader. Speaker Om Birla later reminded members to maintain decorum during such moments of tribute and urged everyone to uphold the dignity of the House.

The session then proceeded with the scheduled agenda, including discussions on consumer protection and related policy matters.
