CBSE Unveils Assessment Framework for Class 10 Students in West Asia

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a comprehensive evaluation plan to determine the results of Class 10 students whose examinations were cancelled across several countries in West Asia due to escalating regional tensions. This decision follows a thorough review of the ground situation in Bahrain, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Examinations Already Conducted

According to Sanyam Bhardwaj, the Board’s Examination Controller, examinations scheduled between February 17 and February 28 were conducted successfully without any disruption. During this period, students completed papers in six major subjects, including Mathematics, English, and Science. Additionally, assessments for 16 language subjects and 22 skill-based subjects were also finished within this timeframe.

Students Categorised into Five Groups

To ensure a fair and transparent evaluation process, the Board has classified affected students into five distinct categories based on the number of examinations they managed to appear for. These categories are:

  • Students who appeared for all scheduled examinations
  • Students who appeared for four examinations
  • Students who appeared for three examinations
  • Students who appeared for two examinations
  • Private students under the compartment category

Methodology for Calculating Scores

The assessment strategy varies according to the category under which a student falls. For those who successfully completed all their examinations, results will be declared based on the actual marks they secured in each subject. There will be no alternative calculation involved for this group.

Students who appeared for four examinations will have their scores for the remaining uncompleted subjects derived from the average of their best three subjects. This ensures that students who performed well in their attempted papers are not unduly penalised for circumstances beyond their control.

Similarly, for students who managed to sit for only three examinations, the marks for the subjects that could not be conducted will be calculated using the average of their two highest-scoring subjects. This approach provides a reasonable estimate of their likely performance in the missed papers.

A smaller cohort of students appeared for just two examinations. For these individuals, the average marks obtained in those two subjects will be applied uniformly to all other subjects for which examinations were cancelled.

Result Declaration and Future Opportunities

The Board has confirmed that results for all affected students will be announced simultaneously with the general results for other candidates. This ensures that no student faces a delay in receiving their academic credentials.

Furthermore, CBSE has assured students that they will have the opportunity to improve their scores in the future through the Board’s improvement examination scheme. This provision allows students to reappear for specific subjects if they wish to enhance their overall performance or refine their grades.

The evaluation framework reflects the Board’s commitment to ensuring that students in conflict-affected regions are not disadvantaged academically. By adopting a pragmatic approach that balances fairness with practicality, CBSE has provided clarity and reassurance to thousands of students and their families navigating these challenging circumstances.
