Supreme Court Allows Rajasthan SI Exam to Proceed as Scheduled
The Supreme Court has declined to postpone the Rajasthan Sub-Inspector and Platoon Commander recruitment examination scheduled for April 5-6, 2026. While the court permitted candidates to sit for the test, it mandated that their results remain withheld until pending legal matters are resolved.
Court’s Decision on Examination Schedule
A bench comprising Justices Dipankar Dutta and Satish Chandra Sharma heard the miscellaneous application arising from Special Leave Petition (Civil) No. 38278/2025 on Thursday. The applicants had sought a stay on the examination, but the court refused to entertain the request for postponement.
In a balanced approach, the bench allowed the petitioners and similarly placed candidates to appear for the examination. However, the court explicitly directed that no results would be declared for these candidates. Their participation remains strictly provisional and subject to further orders. The court also clarified that this arrangement would not create any equity in their favor.
Applicants’ Plea and Grounds for Postponement
The application moved before the court requested a postponement of approximately four weeks. Counsel for the applicants argued that related appeals are still pending before the Rajasthan High Court, where judgments have been reserved but not yet delivered. They contended that holding the examination at this stage would render their legal rights ineffective.
State’s Opposition to Any Delay
Shiv Mangal Sharma, Additional Advocate General representing the Rajasthan government, strongly opposed any postponement. He submitted that thousands of candidates are prepared to appear for the examination, and the state has already completed all necessary administrative and logistical arrangements. Sharma further argued that deferring the exam at this juncture would create widespread disruption and adversely impact public interest.
Provisional Participation with Conditions
Weighing the competing arguments, the Supreme Court chose not to interfere with the scheduled examination process. Instead, it granted limited relief to the applicants by allowing them to participate in the test while keeping their results in abeyance. This arrangement ensures that candidates are not deprived of the opportunity to appear, while also protecting the integrity of the ongoing judicial proceedings.
Background of the Recruitment Dispute
The matter carries significant weight due to its connection with the 2021 recruitment drive, which was marred by allegations of large-scale paper leaks, multiple FIRs, and judicial inquiries. These developments led to fresh recruitment notifications and subsequent appellate proceedings before the Rajasthan High Court.
The current dispute will now hinge on the final outcome of the appeals pending before the High Court. The judgment in those appeals will ultimately determine the rights of the concerned candidates. Until then, those permitted to take the examination will have their results held in escrow, pending the court’s final word on the matter.
This ruling reflects the judiciary’s attempt to balance the interests of thousands of aspirants who have prepared for the examination against the legal challenges raised by a section of candidates. By allowing the exam to proceed while withholding results, the court has ensured that neither side suffers irreparable prejudice at this stage.
