AI Positioned as Key to Future Learning at IGNOU Convocation

At the 39th convocation of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), the Vice President underscored the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in education. Speaking at the ceremony, he emphasized that AI-driven learning would not only expand knowledge but also make education more effective and contemporary.

Embracing Technological Change

The Vice President encouraged students and educators to view AI as an opportunity rather than a threat. He drew parallels with the arrival of computers, which initially sparked fears of job losses but ultimately created new employment avenues and contributed significantly to national development. He urged the audience to adopt AI with a positive mindset, recognizing its capacity to offer personalized learning experiences and better guidance to students.

A Milestone for Over Three Lakh Graduates

The ceremony witnessed the conferral of degrees upon more than 3.24 lakh graduates across various regional centers nationwide. In addition to undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, the university also awarded PhD degrees and gold medals to deserving scholars. Simultaneous convocation programs were organized at multiple regional centers, ensuring broad participation and inclusivity.

Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor attended as the distinguished guest of honor, adding prestige to the occasion.

Digital Education and Inclusive Initiatives

A significant highlight of the event was the inauguration of 17 SWAYAM PRABHA studios at IGNOU regional centers. These studios are expected to strengthen digital education by delivering quality academic content to learners in remote and underserved areas. The university also launched its profile report for 2026 and a dedicated alumni portal to foster stronger connections with its vast network of former students.

Celebrating Diversity Among Graduates

This year’s graduating cohort reflected remarkable diversity and inclusivity. Women constituted 56 percent of the graduates, while 61 percent hailed from rural India. Additionally, over 58 percent of the degree recipients belonged to backward communities, showcasing the university’s commitment to democratizing higher education.

Voices of Leadership and Inspiration

The Lieutenant Governor motivated students to embrace lifelong learning, uphold integrity, and maintain a spirit of contribution toward society. Meanwhile, IGNOU’s Vice Chancellor highlighted the university’s achievements and its ongoing efforts to expand education in Indian languages, making learning accessible to a wider demographic.

The convocation served as a powerful reminder of how open and distance learning continues to bridge educational gaps while adapting to the demands of a technology-driven future. With AI poised to reshape pedagogical approaches, institutions like IGNOU are leading the way in preparing students for the opportunities that lie ahead.
