CBSE to Introduce Computational Thinking and AI Curriculum for Classes 3–8
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the rollout of a new curriculum focused on Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for students in classes 3 through 8, set to begin in the 2026–27 academic session. The official notification, released on April 9, 2026, also designates “Computational Thinking and Understanding AI” as a training subject for the upcoming session.
Aligned with National Education Policy 2020
This curriculum has been developed in alignment with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023. The initiative aims to nurture logical reasoning among students, strengthen their ability to solve problems systematically, improve pattern recognition skills, and promote an understanding of the ethical use of artificial intelligence.
According to CBSE, the program will also equip educators with modern teaching methodologies, enabling them to integrate CT and AI concepts seamlessly across multiple subjects.
Core Training Areas Defined
Training activities in schools will revolve around several key themes designed to build a strong foundation in computational thinking and AI. These include:
- Fundamental concepts of computational thinking and artificial intelligence
- Progression from game-based learning to abstract reasoning
- Using mathematics as the foundational basis for CT and AI
- Integrating computational thinking into various subject areas
- Practical applications of AI in everyday life
- Assessment strategies and teaching approaches
- Ethical and responsible use of AI technologies
District-Level Workshops Planned
Schools have been directed to organize workshops and discussions on CT and AI at the district level. These sessions can be conducted in offline mode. The responsibility for selecting workshop topics, arranging venues, inviting subject-matter experts, and managing other logistical details rests with individual schools. Additionally, maintaining proper documentation of all training activities has been made mandatory.
Regional Programs and Registration Details
Beyond district-level efforts, CBSE will also conduct regional workshops and orientation programs. Participation in these events requires online registration, with a fee of ₹700 per participant. Schools may nominate their teachers for these sessions, which will be hosted under the Centers of Excellence (CoE) framework.

CBSE has encouraged all affiliated schools to actively implement these initiatives and ensure that teachers are enrolled in the training programs. This move is widely viewed as a significant step toward preparing students for the future, enhancing their technological literacy, and modernizing the overall education system.
