Exam Integrity Under Fire at Patna’s IGIMS

A fresh controversy has erupted at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna, one of Bihar’s most respected medical institutions. Allegations of question paper leaks and systemic malpractice have surfaced just ahead of the final MBBS and postgraduate examinations, leaving students angry and demanding answers.

Anonymous Email Triggers Scandal

The trouble began on March 11, when the institute’s director, Dr. Binde Kumar, received an anonymous email. The message accused a non-teaching staff member from the Dean’s examination office of colluding with students to provide unfair advantages. Despite the seriousness of the allegations, no immediate action was taken against the accused, which only deepened the crisis.

Frustrated by the lack of response, Dean Dr. Prakash Dubey resigned from his position. In his place, Dr. Neeru Goel was appointed as the new Dean on April 2. A meeting was subsequently scheduled for April 7 to address the matter, but Director Dr. Binde Kumar did not attend, further stalling any resolution.

Investigation Reveals Evidence of Tampering

An internal inquiry conducted on March 17, in the presence of the Dean, Associate Dean, and Registrar, brought several malpractices to light. Investigators found that sealed packets for the MBBS 2025 examinations had been opened prematurely, and documents had been altered. Significant discrepancies were also detected in answer booklets, coded leaflets, and attendance sheets—irregularities that point strongly toward forgery and premeditated manipulation.

The findings suggest that the examination process was compromised at multiple levels, raising serious concerns about the institute’s administrative oversight and internal controls.

Students Fear Speaking Out

Despite the gravity of the situation, students have remained largely silent. Many are reluctant to voice their concerns openly, fearing they could be targeted or face repercussions for speaking up. While there is visible resentment over the lack of disciplinary action, the climate of fear has kept most from coming forward.

On the condition of anonymity, some students revealed that influential families may be shielding the main culprits. They allege that the children of well-connected individuals are being protected, which is why no decisive action has been taken against those responsible. Sources suggest that between 40 and 50 students may be involved in the malpractice network, yet no one in authority is willing to take a firm stand.

Demand for External Probe

Students are now calling for an independent investigation by an external agency. They believe that only an impartial inquiry can uncover the full truth and ensure that both the students involved and the officials who enabled the fraud are held accountable. The demand reflects a growing distrust in the institute’s internal mechanisms to deliver justice.

The situation at IGIMS highlights a broader concern about the integrity of medical education in the state. If left unaddressed, such incidents could undermine the credibility of the institution and the value of its degrees. For now, all eyes are on the administration to see whether it will act decisively or allow the matter to be buried under bureaucratic inertia.

As the academic community watches closely, the need for transparency and accountability has never been more urgent. The future of hundreds of medical students—and the reputation of IGIMS itself—hangs in the balance.
