Bihar Political Turmoil: BJP Puts Shivraj Chouhan in Charge as New Government Takes Shape

Political activity in Bihar has intensified dramatically following Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s transition to the Rajya Sabha. The Bharatiya Janata Party has moved swiftly to consolidate its position, assigning a pivotal role to Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan as the party prepares to form a new government in the state.

Shivraj Chouhan Appointed as Central Observer

The BJP’s parliamentary board has officially designated Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who currently serves as the Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare as well as Rural Development, as the central observer for the election of the party’s legislative leader in Bihar. This appointment signals the party’s intent to maintain tight control over the leadership selection process during this critical transition period.

Arun Singh, the BJP’s national general secretary, confirmed this development through an official notification, underscoring the strategic importance the party places on Bihar’s political landscape. With Nitish Kumar’s departure from the chief minister’s post, the party has wasted no time in activating its succession plan.

Legislators Summoned to Patna for Crucial Meetings

In preparation for the government formation scheduled for April 15, all BJP and Janata Dal (United) legislators have been directed to remain in Patna. A significant meeting is set to take place today at the Chief Minister’s residence, where party leaders will deliberate on several key matters including potential cabinet expansion, the final count of ministerial positions, and the allocation of government departments.

According to sources familiar with the developments, final decisions on these issues are expected within the next two days. The urgency of these deliberations reflects the complex political calculations involved in balancing the interests of both coalition partners.

Nitish Kumar’s Resignation Timeline

Sanjay Kumar Jha, the national executive president of Janata Dal (United), has indicated that the formal process of forming a new government will commence after April 13. Reports suggest that the current government’s final cabinet meeting may take place on that very day, marking the conclusion of Nitish Kumar’s lengthy tenure as chief minister.

Following the conclusion of Kharmas, an inauspicious period in the Hindu calendar, Nitish Kumar is expected to submit his resignation to the Governor on April 14. This will pave the way for a meeting of the National Democratic Alliance legislature party, during which a new leader will be chosen. The swearing-in ceremony for the new government has been tentatively scheduled for April 15.

High-Profile Meetings at Chief Minister’s Residence

Adding to the political intrigue, both Deputy Chief Ministers—Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Sinha—arrived at the Chief Minister’s residence on Saturday evening at approximately 5:30 PM. They were accompanied by Minister Lallendra Paswan. The trio spent roughly thirty minutes in discussions with Nitish Kumar.

Following this meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sinha proceeded to Lok Bhawan, where he remained for approximately another thirty minutes. Political analysts have been quick to note that these sequential visits are unlikely to be coincidental. The timing of Samrat Choudhary’s meeting with the Chief Minister, followed almost immediately by Vijay Sinha’s visit to the Raj Bhawan, has been interpreted as a clear indication of significant political realignment in the state.

Mystery Surrounding BJP Core Committee Meeting Cancellation

Adding another layer of intrigue to the situation is the sudden cancellation of a BJP core committee meeting in Delhi. This unexpected development has fueled speculation among political observers about the possibility of unforeseen developments in Bihar’s political scenario. The cancellation has led to widespread conjecture about internal party discussions and potential last-minute adjustments to the transition plan.

What Lies Ahead for Bihar’s Political Future

As Bihar stands on the cusp of this significant political transition, several key questions remain unanswered. The identity of the next chief minister continues to be a subject of intense speculation, with multiple names being floated within political circles. The BJP’s decision to appoint Shivraj Singh Chouhan as observer suggests that the party is keen to ensure a smooth and orderly transfer of power while maintaining the delicate balance of its coalition with JD(U).

The upcoming meetings and decisions over the next few days will be crucial in determining the direction of Bihar’s governance. With the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for April 15, the state is set to witness a new chapter in its political journey. All eyes now turn to Patna, where the final pieces of this political puzzle are expected to fall into place over the coming days.

The rapid sequence of events—from Nitish Kumar’s Rajya Sabha move to the BJP’s organizational preparations and the flurry of high-level meetings—underscores the significance of this transition. As Bihar prepares for this change in leadership, the political establishment remains on high alert, anticipating further developments that could reshape the state’s political landscape for years to come.
