CBSE Class 10 Second Exam 2026 Draws Over 6.68 Lakh Applications

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has received more than 6.68 lakh applications for the second edition of the Class 10 board examinations in 2026. According to an official announcement made on Friday, the overwhelming majority of these applications were submitted by students seeking to improve their scores from the main examination, the results of which were released earlier this month.

Breakdown of Application Figures

The detailed statistics reveal that a total of 6,68,854 regular students have registered for this second examination cycle. The applicants fall into three distinct categories based on their objectives:

  • 5,25,655 students have applied solely for score improvement
  • 85,285 students fall under the compartment category
  • 57,914 students have applied under both compartment and improvement categories

Understanding the Two-Edition Examination System

Starting from 2026, the board has implemented a two-edition examination system for Class 10 students. Under this new structure, appearing in the first (main) examination is mandatory for all students. The second examination serves as an additional opportunity specifically designed for those who either received compartment status or wish to enhance their performance. A key feature of this system is that the better score achieved across both examinations will be reflected in the final marksheet and certificate.

Subject Selection for Score Improvement

Students who successfully passed the first examination have the option to improve their performance in up to three subjects, including science, mathematics, social science, and language papers. The subject-wise distribution of improvement applications is as follows:

  • 1,92,508 students have applied to improve in a single subject
  • 2,79,227 students have opted to improve in two subjects
  • 1,97,119 students have registered for improvement in three subjects

Participation of Private Candidates

In addition to regular students, 9,765 private candidates have also submitted applications for this examination cycle. Among these private applicants, 8,323 are appearing under the third chance category, while the remaining 1,442 are taking their first attempt.

Gender-Wise Registration Data

The registration figures show a notable participation across gender categories. A total of 2,66,209 female candidates and 4,02,643 male candidates have enrolled for the examinations, with an additional two candidates registered under the ‘other’ category.

Examination Schedule and Administrative Preparations

The second board examination is scheduled to commence on May 15, 2026, and will continue until May 21, 2026. The official date sheet was released on April 23, 2026, and is available for viewing on the board’s official website. The board has confirmed that all pre-examination procedures, including the submission of the List of Candidates (LOC) and the release of the date sheet, have been completed in a timely and organized manner.

Performance in the Main Examination

The main Class 10 examination for 2026 witnessed substantial participation, with 24,83,479 students registered for the tests. Of these, 24,71,777 students actually appeared for the examinations, and 23,16,008 students successfully passed. This translates to an overall pass percentage of 93.70 percent for the main examination cycle.

Results Timeline and Certificate Issuance

Results for the second board examination are expected to be announced by the end of June 2026, in accordance with the examination bylaws. Students can access their scores from the first examination through the DigiLocker platform. Those who choose not to appear for the second examination can proceed with admission to Class 11 based on their existing scores. The final passing certificates and merit certificates will be distributed following the declaration of the second examination results.
