Exam Overview: Format and Participation

The NCET 2026 examination was conducted in computer-based mode on April 17 and 18. The test was held in two shifts daily — the morning session ran from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, while the afternoon session took place from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A total of approximately 92,776 candidates registered and appeared for the examination across various test centres nationwide.

Marking Scheme Explained

Understanding the marking pattern is essential for candidates to calculate their probable scores. The question paper comprised 160 compulsory multiple-choice questions, carrying a total of 640 marks. Each correct answer awards 4 marks, while an incorrect response results in a deduction of 1 mark. Questions left unanswered do not attract any negative marking, allowing candidates to strategize their attempts accordingly.

Purpose and Scope of NCET

NCET is a national-level entrance examination conducted on behalf of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). The primary purpose of this test is to facilitate admission into the 4-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP). Successful candidates gain entry into this prestigious programme offered at central and state universities, as well as at premier institutions including IITs, NITs, and other government-funded educational establishments.

As the objection window remains open, candidates are encouraged to thoroughly review the answer key against their own responses and submit challenges if necessary. The final answer key, post-review of objections, will serve as the basis for result compilation and merit list preparation.
