University of Chicago Honours Former Indian CEA with Prestigious Alumni Award

In a proud moment for India, the University of Chicago has conferred its top alumni honour upon Krishnamurthy V. Subramanian, the country’s former Chief Economic Adviser. The recognition celebrates his outstanding contributions and significant global impact, placing him among an elite group of distinguished scholars associated with the institution.

A Historic First for an Indian Economist

The university announced the award on Friday, noting that Subramanian becomes the first Indian economist to receive this honour since the award’s inception in 1941. This achievement places him alongside Nobel laureates and renowned academics such as Paul Samuelson, Gary Becker, Claudia Goldin, Carl Sagan, and Philip Kotler.

Expressing his gratitude, Subramanian said, “Being part of this academic tradition fills me with immense pride. What makes this even more meaningful is that this recognition comes for work done from India and for India. It is a privilege to follow in the footsteps of pioneers like C.V. Raman, Homi J. Bhabha, Vikram Sarabhai, and M.S. Swaminathan.”

Key Contributions During the Pandemic

During the COVID-19 crisis, Subramanian emerged as a crucial economic voice. The Economic Surveys he authored were widely regarded as instrumental in shaping India’s policy response, focusing on enhancing competitiveness and ensuring inclusive growth for all sections of society.

One of his most notable contributions was being among the first to advocate for a V-shaped economic recovery—the idea that the economy could rebound swiftly after an initial sharp downturn. This perspective helped bolster confidence in India’s resilience during an exceptionally challenging period.

The award specifically acknowledges his work within India, marking a significant shift as the honour has historically been bestowed predominantly upon individuals associated with Western nations.

Shaping National Economic Policy

Serving as Chief Economic Adviser from 2018 to 2021, Subramanian authored three Economic Surveys and played a pivotal role in steering the nation’s economic policies through turbulent times. His analytical framework and policy recommendations were widely respected across governmental and financial circles.

In a surprising development last May, the government removed him from his position as Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) six months before his tenure was due to end. No official reason was provided for his early departure. Subsequently, in August, former Reserve Bank of India Governor Urjit Patel was appointed to succeed him at the IMF.

Despite this abrupt end to his IMF role, Subramanian’s legacy in shaping India’s economic discourse remains firmly established—a legacy now permanently recognised by one of the world’s most prestigious academic institutions.
