Digital Answer Sheet Evaluation: Why CBSE’s New System Is Sparking Debate

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) introduced a fully digital evaluation process for Class XII answer sheets this year, replacing the traditional pen-and-paper checking method. Under this new system—known as On-Screen Marking (OSM)—answer booklets are scanned and uploaded, allowing examiners to assess them directly on computer monitors. While the board has framed this as a step toward modernization, the rollout has triggered significant backlash from students and parents across social media platforms.

The Core of the Controversy

Following the announcement of Class XII results, a wave of criticism emerged online, particularly from students who appeared in subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics. Many candidates reported receiving scores that were 10 to 20 percent lower than their expectations. This discrepancy has fueled frustration and raised doubts about the reliability of the digital marking system.

Even more concerning are reports from students who had qualified for JEE Main but received unexpectedly low marks—or in some cases, failing grades—in their board exams. Such instances have amplified suspicions about the accuracy and fairness of the OSM process.

Beyond the issue of marks, several other grievances have surfaced. Students and parents have voiced concerns about:

  • Pages or individual answers potentially being missed during the scanning process
  • The possibility of technical glitches affecting evaluation outcomes
  • A perceived lack of transparency in how the digital assessment is conducted

Demand for Free Access to Scanned Copies

A particularly contentious point involves the cost of viewing scanned answer sheets. Many users have questioned why CBSE charges approximately ₹700 for students to access their evaluated copies. Critics argue that if the board truly believes in the fairness of its process, it should provide these scanned documents to students free of charge. For families from middle-class backgrounds, this fee adds an unnecessary financial burden, making it harder for them to verify their results independently.

CBSE’s Official Response

In response to the growing unrest, CBSE issued a formal clarification on May 15 through its official social media channels. The board emphasized that the OSM system is designed to be impartial, transparent, and consistent in awarding marks. It also reminded students that those dissatisfied with their Class XII results in 2026 are eligible to apply for re-evaluation through the official process.

The board’s statement sought to reassure students that the digital evaluation method follows a structured, step-by-step marking approach, ensuring that every answer is reviewed fairly and uniformly across all examiners.

Understanding the On-Screen Marking System

The On-Screen Marking system represents a significant departure from conventional evaluation methods. Under this framework, examiners are required to award marks step by step for each response, which CBSE claims minimizes errors and promotes consistency. The board argues that this approach not only speeds up the evaluation process but also reduces the likelihood of mistakes during mark tabulation and result compilation.

By digitizing the entire workflow, CBSE intends to bring greater accountability and precision to an area that has historically been prone to human error. The system also aligns with broader efforts to reduce paper usage and support environmental sustainability in educational administration.

Decline in Pass Percentage

This year’s results also revealed a noticeable dip in overall performance. The pass percentage for CBSE Class XII examinations in 2026 stood at 85.2 percent, compared to 88.39 percent in the previous year. This represents a decline of approximately 3.19 percentage points, a shift that has further fueled discussions about whether the new digital evaluation method has influenced scoring patterns.

Educators Rally Behind the New System

Despite the criticism from students and parents, many teachers across the country have expressed support for the OSM system. According to CBSE, a significant number of educators have welcomed the change, describing it as a crucial advancement in modernizing the examination process.

Teachers who favor the system point to several advantages:

  • Reduced errors in checking and uploading marks
  • More accurate assessments of student performance
  • A streamlined, faster, and more accountable evaluation workflow
  • A user-friendly interface that became easier to navigate after initial training

Supporters also highlight the environmental benefits of a paperless evaluation model, viewing it as a positive step toward sustainable practices in education. They believe that as familiarity with the system grows, confidence in the results will strengthen among both students and their families.

Looking Ahead

The introduction of digital evaluation marks a notable shift in how CBSE conducts its examinations. While the technology promises efficiency and consistency, the concerns raised by students and parents cannot be ignored. The debate over transparency, accessibility, and fairness is likely to continue as more stakeholders engage with the system. For now, the board has made it clear that re-evaluation remains an option for those who believe their results do not reflect their actual performance.

As the education landscape evolves, finding the right balance between technological advancement and stakeholder trust will be essential. The coming months may see further refinements to the OSM process, shaped by the feedback and experiences of this year’s examination cycle.
