AI Will Reshape Every Sector, But Skill Development Remains the Real Challenge
At the recently held Samwad Uttar Pradesh 2026 conclave in the state capital, Prof. Manmohan Prasad Gupta, Director of IIM Lucknow, delivered a compelling address on the transformative power of artificial intelligence. Speaking at the event organized by a leading media group, Prof. Gupta emphasized that while AI is poised to revolutionize every facet of human life, the nation’s ability to adapt through robust skill development will determine its success in this new era.
Prof. Gupta underscored that the coming generations will face unprecedented challenges as AI becomes deeply integrated into daily existence. However, he argued that the central question is not whether AI will arrive—that is inevitable—but rather how prepared the country is to cultivate the necessary competencies among its people. The focus, he stressed, must shift toward building a workforce that can leverage AI effectively rather than merely reacting to its disruptions.
New Initiatives at IIM Lucknow
During his address, Prof. Gupta shed light on several new academic programs being introduced at IIM Lucknow. The institution is launching two to three fresh courses designed to meet the evolving demands of the modern economy. A key objective, he noted, is to extend the reach of these educational opportunities to every district across the state, ensuring that geographical barriers do not hinder access to quality management education.
One standout initiative involves the selection of 60 students who have cleared the JEE Advanced examination. These carefully chosen candidates will undergo specialized training aimed at honing their entrepreneurial and technical skills. This program reflects a broader vision of nurturing talent from the ground up, equipping young minds with the tools they need to thrive in a competitive landscape.
The Evolving Job Market
Prof. Gupta acknowledged that the rise of AI will inevitably transform the employment landscape. While certain job categories may see a reduction in numbers, he pointed out that overall growth potential remains strong. The key, he said, lies in how educational institutions and policymakers respond to these shifts. Rather than fearing automation, the focus should be on preparing students to work alongside intelligent systems, using them as tools for enhanced productivity and innovation.
He emphasized the importance of integrating AI literacy into the core curriculum. Children must be taught not just how to use AI, but how to think critically about it, develop problem-solving skills, and apply technological knowledge in meaningful ways. This holistic approach, he argued, is essential for building a generation that can lead rather than follow.
Fostering Innovation and Entrepreneurship
The IIM Lucknow Director made it clear that the institution’s programs are not solely aimed at producing corporate-ready graduates. A significant emphasis is being placed on fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. He articulated an ambitious vision: the 60 students enrolled in the flagship program today should go on to establish 60 companies within the next four years. These enterprises, in turn, would create employment opportunities for countless other young people, thereby contributing to the state’s economic ecosystem.
“Our commitment to Uttar Pradesh is firm,” he stated. “We are not just educating individuals; we are building an infrastructure of opportunity that will benefit the entire region.” This statement reflects a broader strategic shift toward self-sufficiency and local economic development, driven by homegrown talent and enterprise.
Rethinking Technology: From Users to Creators
Prof. Gupta also raised thought-provoking questions about India’s position in the global technology supply chain. He observed that the country currently stands predominantly on the “user side” of the technological divide. To truly advance, he argued, we must understand where our computers, mobile devices, chips, and other essential equipment originate. It is equally important to know who holds the patents and drives the innovation behind these products.
He outlined three critical dimensions that deserve attention:
- Who is actually manufacturing the technology and devices we rely on?
- Where are these chips and components being produced?
- Who is ultimately utilizing these technologies to their fullest potential?
By examining these three aspects, it becomes clear that India’s role is currently limited to consumption rather than creation. Closing this gap, Prof. Gupta suggested, should be a national priority.
Predictive Technology for Disaster Prevention
Drawing on real-world examples, Prof. Gupta highlighted the potential of AI to save lives through predictive analytics. He recalled the devastating cloudburst that struck Uttarakhand in 2012, causing immense destruction and loss of life. In the future, he asked, can we develop systems capable of providing accurate, early warnings for such natural disasters? If we can predict these events even four hours in advance, the potential to mitigate damage and protect communities would be immense.
Similarly, he pointed to aging infrastructure such as bridges and other structures that may be at risk of failure. The ability to monitor structural integrity in real time and predict when a bridge might weaken or collapse could prevent catastrophic accidents. Such precise, timely information, he argued, is not just a technological aspiration but a moral imperative. By investing in these capabilities, we can build a safer, more resilient society for the future.
