High-Level Meeting at Defence Minister’s Residence Over NEET Paper Leak

In a decisive move to address the NEET paper leak controversy, a high-level meeting was convened at the official residence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday. The gathering brought together key figures from the education ministry, the National Testing Agency (NTA), and the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to chart a course of action aimed at restoring the credibility of the examination process.

According to sources familiar with the deliberations, the meeting was attended by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, NTA Director General Abhishek Singh, and several senior officials from the PMO. The central focus of the discussion was to rebuild trust in the NEET examination framework and ensure that such a breach does not occur again.

Government Entrusts Security Framework to Defence Ministry

Sources indicate that the government has now placed the overall responsibility for security and logistics under a specialised mechanism led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. This marks a significant shift in how the examination process will be managed, with a stronger emphasis on safeguarding question papers at every stage.

During the roughly 40-minute meeting, the officials conducted a thorough review of the entire question paper lifecycle—from the setting of papers to their printing, transportation, storage, and final delivery to examination centres. The objective was to identify vulnerabilities and implement a foolproof system that leaves no room for malpractice.

Prime Minister Personally Monitoring the Process

It has also come to light that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally overseeing the entire procedure. His direct involvement underscores the seriousness with which the government is treating the matter. The presence of senior officials from both the PMO and the Ministry of Education at the meeting reflects the coordinated approach being adopted to resolve the crisis.

Paramilitary Forces to Secure Sensitive Centres

One of the key decisions emerging from the discussion pertains to the deployment of paramilitary forces at highly sensitive examination centres. These centres, which are believed to have been potential targets of paper-leak networks, will now be guarded by central armed police forces. In addition, personnel from investigative agencies will be stationed at these locations in plain clothes to discreetly monitor activities and thwart any attempts at malpractice.

Given that the leak is suspected to have originated from individuals involved in the paper-setting process itself, the authorities have decided to introduce a strict cross-verification protocol. Only after thorough background checks will individuals be assigned duties related to the examination.

Proposal to Use Air Force Aircraft for Paper Transportation

In a bid to further tighten security, the government is exploring the use of defence infrastructure and Air Force aircraft for the transportation of question papers. The proposal under consideration involves moving papers from printing presses to distribution hubs via Air Force planes and specially secured vehicles. Additionally, the papers could be stored at defence establishments until they are dispatched to examination venues.

This move is seen as a proactive step to eliminate any possibility of interception or tampering during transit, a stage that is often considered the most vulnerable in the examination process.

Background and Upcoming Re-examination

The NEET UG 2026 examination was originally conducted on May 3, but was cancelled on May 12 after irregularities came to light. The re-examination is now scheduled for June 21, with approximately 2.3 million students expected to appear. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has been continuously reviewing the preparations to ensure that the rescheduled test is conducted smoothly and without any untoward incidents.

The government’s multi-pronged strategy, involving the defence establishment, paramilitary forces, and stringent verification protocols, signals a firm commitment to upholding the integrity of one of the country’s most competitive medical entrance examinations.
