Supreme Court Demands Accountability in NEET UG Paper Leak Case
The Supreme Court on Friday delivered a stern message regarding the NEET UG paper leak, emphasizing that such incidents will persist until genuine accountability is established. The bench expressed deep concern over the emotional distress caused to students and their families across the nation.
Court Warns That Without Accountability, Problems Will Persist
A bench comprising Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe was hearing multiple petitions related to the NEET UG examination controversy. Among the pleas was a demand for restructuring or replacing the National Testing Agency (NTA) to create a more robust and independent body responsible for conducting medical entrance examinations.
During the proceedings, the court observed that the root cause of such recurring issues lies in the absence of clear accountability. The bench noted that when examination irregularities occur, the impact extends far beyond the students themselves, deeply affecting their families who invest emotionally in these high-stakes assessments. The court stressed that the aspirations of the country’s youth must not be undermined.
Government Assures Court of High-Level Attention
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that the central government takes the students’ concerns with utmost seriousness. He revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally monitoring the situation to ensure no gaps remain in the examination process.
Mehta also briefed the court about enhanced security protocols and new mechanisms implemented for the upcoming NEET UG re-test scheduled for June 21. These measures are designed to prevent any recurrence of paper leaks and restore confidence in the examination system.
Court Directs Affidavit and Schedules Next Hearing
The Supreme Court has instructed the central government to file an affidavit detailing its response to the situation. The next hearing in this matter has been scheduled for the second week of July, allowing time for the submission and review of the required documentation.
Examination Timeline and Investigation Status
The NEET UG examination, conducted annually for admission to medical courses, was held on May 3 this year. However, following allegations of paper leakage, the National Testing Agency took the unprecedented step of cancelling the examination on May 12. The re-examination is now set to take place on June 21.
Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continues its probe into the paper leak case. The investigation aims to identify those responsible for the breach and determine how the examination materials were compromised.
