CBSE Deploys Cyber Experts to Address OnMark Portal Security Gaps

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has publicly acknowledged security vulnerabilities discovered in its OnMark online evaluation portal and confirmed that corrective measures are already underway. In an official statement shared on social media platform X, the board revealed that a dedicated team of cybersecurity specialists has been actively working on strengthening the system over the past several days.

These experts have been drawn from multiple government departments as well as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), reflecting a coordinated approach to resolving the issue. The board stated that it has been closely tracking the vulnerabilities flagged in public discussions and is committed to ensuring the platform’s integrity.

Vulnerabilities Identified and Rectified

According to CBSE officials, the specific security flaws that were brought to light have now been addressed. The expert team has also initiated the process of migrating the affected systems to a more robust and secure framework. Beyond fixing the immediate issues, the board said it is continuing to scan for any other potential weaknesses so that future cyber threats can be neutralised before they escalate into larger problems.

This proactive stance is aimed at reinforcing the portal’s defences and maintaining the trust of students, schools, and parents who rely on the board’s digital infrastructure during examination cycles.

Gratitude Extended to Ethical Hackers and Vigilant Citizens

In its statement, CBSE expressed appreciation for the ethical hackers and alert citizens who brought the security lapses to the board’s attention. The board noted that it has already reached out directly to some of these individuals to better understand the nature of the issues they identified.

CBSE also issued a public appeal, urging anyone who discovers potential security concerns in the future to report them directly to the board’s dedicated security team. This open line of communication is intended to facilitate quick action and prevent misuse of the platform.

Political Backlash Over Alleged Data Leak

The security concerns surrounding the OnMark portal have also sparked political controversy. The Indian National Congress has seized upon the matter, alleging that answer sheets of Class XII students were exposed due to a data breach. Party leaders have directed sharp criticism at the central government and the Union Education Minister, suggesting that the ministry has become a hub of mismanagement and calling for accountability.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took to X to voice his concerns, stating that the apparent incompetence within the examination body had once again come to the fore. He claimed that answer sheets belonging to approximately 20 lakh Class XII students had been made publicly accessible, describing the incident as a serious failure on the part of the authorities responsible for safeguarding student data.

Ongoing Monitoring and Future Preparedness

While the immediate vulnerabilities have reportedly been fixed, CBSE has made it clear that monitoring will continue without interruption. The deployment of cyber experts is not a one-time measure but part of an ongoing strategy to upgrade the portal’s security architecture. The board emphasised that regular audits and continuous surveillance would be conducted to ensure that the OnMark system remains resilient against emerging cyber threats.

As educational institutions increasingly move toward digital solutions for examinations and evaluations, the security of such platforms has become a matter of national importance. CBSE’s response to this incident signals a recognition of the heightened risks and the need for vigilance in protecting sensitive academic data.

The board has not disclosed a specific timeline for the completion of the system migration, but officials have assured stakeholders that all necessary steps are being taken on a priority basis. Parents and students have been advised to remain patient while the technical teams complete their work behind the scenes.

This episode serves as a reminder of the growing challenges posed by cyber threats in the education sector. With millions of students depending on secure digital platforms for their academic futures, the stakes are high, and the margin for error is minimal. CBSE’s swift acknowledgment of the issue and its visible efforts to rectify the situation will likely be watched closely by educational institutions across the country.
