Delhi Schools Set Ambitious Zero Waste Target by 2027

In a significant push toward environmental sustainability, Delhi’s education minister Ashish Sood has urged all schools to transform their campuses into zero waste facilities by March 2027. The initiative focuses on implementing sustainable waste management practices including waste segregation, recycling, composting, and responsible resource utilization across educational institutions.

During an interactive session organized by the Directorate of Education at CM Shri School in Posangipur, Janakpuri, Sood engaged with principals and school heads from government institutions. The hybrid-mode discussion saw participation from 422 government school principals and heads representing five districts and eleven zones.

Comprehensive Review of School Infrastructure and Academic Systems

The dialogue covered a wide spectrum of topics pertaining to the academic environment, educational quality, infrastructure development, cleanliness protocols, safety measures, and administrative frameworks. Sood conducted a thorough assessment of existing facilities and directed deputy directors of education to strengthen classrooms, laboratories, libraries, sports infrastructure, safe drinking water systems, sanitation facilities, and digital learning resources.

Special attention was given to the optimal utilization of smart classrooms, digital libraries, ICT laboratories, language labs, and vocational training facilities. The minister emphasized the need to maximize the potential of these modern educational tools to enhance learning outcomes.

Preparations for Academic Session 2026-27

Reviewing the readiness for the upcoming academic year, Sood stressed the importance of leveraging technology-enabled learning spaces and ensuring that all digital infrastructure operates at full capacity. The focus remains on creating an engaging and future-ready educational ecosystem that benefits every student.

Environmental Initiatives and Tree Plantation Drive

In alignment with the zero waste campus vision, the minister called upon all schools to enthusiastically celebrate World Environment Day on June 5. He also encouraged institutions to actively participate in the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” (A Tree in Mother’s Name) campaign, urging continuous tree plantation efforts throughout the monsoon season.

These environmental initiatives are designed to instill ecological consciousness among students while contributing to the city’s green cover and sustainability goals.

Sharing Best Practices and Success Stories

The interactive session also provided a platform for school leaders to share their experiences and innovative approaches to educational initiatives. Principals from SBV Moti Nagar, CM Shri School Rajouri Garden, Sarvodaya Vidyalaya Sector-8 Rohini, and CM Shri School Hiran Kudna presented their achievements and strategies, offering valuable insights that can be replicated across other institutions.

This collaborative approach underscores the government’s commitment to fostering a culture of continuous improvement and environmental responsibility within the educational sector. By setting clear timelines and measurable objectives, the initiative aims to create model campuses that demonstrate how educational institutions can lead the way in sustainable practices.

The zero waste campus mission represents a holistic approach that combines infrastructure development, pedagogical advancement, and environmental stewardship. Through these coordinated efforts, Delhi’s government schools are poised to become exemplars of sustainability while delivering quality education to students across the capital.
