Over 3 Lakh Aspirants Apply for Engineering Admissions in Tamil Nadu
More than three lakh students have submitted applications for engineering programs across Tamil Nadu this year. Despite the overwhelming response, uncertainty looms over the counselling schedule, as the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has yet to grant final approval for the timeline.
Registration Numbers Cross Expectations
According to a senior official from the Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE), which operates under the state’s Higher Education Department, a total of 2,95,080 candidates had registered for engineering admissions as of June 3. With the registration window remaining open until June 5, officials anticipate the final tally to comfortably surpass the three-lakh mark.
This year’s surge in applications is notably higher than previous years. The increase is partly attributed to the cancellation of the NME exam following reported irregularities, which prompted many students to pivot toward state-level engineering admissions as an alternative pathway.
Counselling Timeline Awaits AICTE Nod
While the registration phase is nearing completion, the counselling schedule remains in limbo. Sources within the DoTE indicate that counselling sessions are expected to begin in the second week of July, a timeline that would allow first-year students to commence their academic term by September 2026. However, this schedule hinges entirely on receiving the green signal from AICTE, which has not yet been communicated.
Fully Online Admission Process
The Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) 2026 process is being conducted entirely online. Candidates will progress through several digital stages, including:
- Online registration and application submission
- Payment of application fees through digital channels
- Choice filling and prioritisation of colleges and branches
- Automated seat allocation based on merit
- Final confirmation of admission
Merit-Based Selection on Class 12 Scores
Admissions to engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu are determined solely on the basis of marks obtained in the Class 12 board examinations. There is no entrance test component for the majority of seats, making the board exam performance the single most critical factor in the selection process.
