Political Firestorm Erupts Over CBSE On-Screen Marking Controversy
The political landscape has heated up significantly following the controversy surrounding the Central Board of Secondary Education’s On-Screen Marking (OSM) system. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning the government’s approach toward the nation’s youth and raising serious concerns about the handling of the examination process.
Rahul Gandhi Praises Student Whistleblowers
During his public remarks on Sunday, Rahul Gandhi commended the efforts of Sarthak Siddhant, an 18-year-old student, and his associate Nisarga Adhikari for exposing what they claim is collusion between CBSE and the Central Organisation for Modern Education and Professional Training (COEMPT). The Congress leader drew a stark contrast between the government’s expectations for young people and the actions taken by these two students.
In a pointed critique, Gandhi remarked that the Prime Minister appears to want the youth to remain occupied with creating short videos and frying snacks rather than asking meaningful questions about the systems that affect their future. He praised Siddhant and Adhikari for demonstrating genuine curiosity and determination in seeking answers to critical issues.
Video Evidence and Social Media Response
Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Gandhi shared footage from his recent meeting with Siddhant. The video captures a conversation where the Congress leader inquires about how the young student managed to uncover alleged discrepancies in the tender process for selecting OSM vendors. During the interaction, Gandhi lauded Siddhant’s investigative approach, suggesting that his work rivals that of professional investigative journalists.
In his Hindi-language post accompanying the video, Gandhi emphasized that despite being just 18 years old, Siddhant’s thinking, courage, and principles set him apart. He noted that both Siddhant and Adhikari achieved what major media organizations and investigative reporters failed to accomplish by bringing the alleged CBSE-COEMPT collusion into the national spotlight.
Government Policies Under Scrutiny
The Congress leader did not hold back in his criticism of the government’s overall approach to youth development. He argued that the administration seems content with young people who remain passive and unquestioning, rather than those who actively engage with important national issues. Gandhi characterized the students’ actions as a victory for youth empowerment and simultaneously a reflection of governmental failure.
He stated that the real strength of the nation’s youth lies in their inquisitiveness, awareness, and intelligence. According to Gandhi, the country’s future direction will be shaped positively by young individuals who refuse to accept things at face value and instead pursue truth and accountability.
Demands for Further Action
In the wake of the controversy, the government has already removed two senior CBSE officials from their positions. However, the Congress party has dismissed this move as mere posturing rather than genuine corrective action. Gandhi has escalated his demands, calling for the removal of the Education Minister and urging the establishment of an independent judicial inquiry into the matter.
The political leader’s meeting with Siddhant and his family took place last Tuesday, during which he shared photographs and encouraged the student to remain steadfast in his principles. On that same day, Siddhant presented his findings regarding the alleged irregularities in the OSM tender process before a parliamentary committee.
Understanding the OSM Controversy
The dispute centers on CBSE’s decision to implement the On-Screen Marking system for evaluating Class 12 board examination answer sheets. This digital assessment method was introduced as a replacement for the traditional manual evaluation process. However, several students have raised concerns that the scanned versions of their answer sheets do not match their original handwriting, casting doubt on the accuracy of the scanning and evaluation process.
These discrepancies have sparked wider questions about the reliability of the OSM system and the transparency of its implementation. The controversy continues to unfold as political pressure mounts and students demand clarity regarding the integrity of their examination results.
The situation highlights broader concerns about educational governance and the importance of accountability in systems that directly impact the lives and futures of millions of young students across the country.
