Parliamentary Panel Urges Overhaul of NEET-UG Administration

Senior officials from the health and education ministries appeared before a parliamentary standing committee on Wednesday, where they faced tough questions and received firm recommendations to modernize India’s medical entrance examination system. The committee strongly advised adopting global best practices, particularly drawing inspiration from large-scale competitive testing models used in the United States and China.

Officials Assure Panel of Fair Re-Examination

The committee summoned secretaries from both ministries, along with top officials from the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the National Medical Commission (NMC), to review preparations for the rescheduled NEET-UG examination set for June 21. This follows the cancellation of the earlier test amid widespread allegations of paper leaks and procedural irregularities.

During the session, officials reassured committee members that robust security protocols have been put in place to ensure the upcoming examination is conducted with complete fairness and transparency. The panel, however, pressed for a more permanent solution—one that would eliminate the possibility of malpractice in future cycles.

Call to Study US and China Examination Systems

Committee members argued that India must move beyond temporary fixes and develop a foolproof mechanism for conducting high-stakes entrance tests. They specifically pointed to the United States and China, where millions of students appear for competitive examinations each year with significantly fewer incidents of leakage or misconduct.

The panel suggested that Indian authorities conduct a detailed study of these international models and adapt their best practices to the local context. Members emphasized that adopting such frameworks could effectively curb paper leaks and other systemic irregularities that have plagued recent examination cycles.

CBI Investigation Review and Security Measures

The committee also reviewed the progress of the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) probe into the NEET-UG paper leak case. Officials briefed members on the status of the investigation and confirmed that all necessary security arrangements are being implemented for the June 21 examination.

Among those present at the meeting were NTA Director General Abhishek Singh, Higher Education Secretary Vineet Joshi, and NMC Chairman Dr. Abhijat C. Sheth. The committee is chaired by Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav.

Concerns Raised Over Student Suicides and Mental Health

A significant portion of the discussion centered on the growing mental health crisis among medical aspirants. Committee members expressed deep concern over rising student suicides linked to exam-related stress and uncertainty. They noted that incidents such as paper leaks and sudden test cancellations are exacerbating anxiety levels among candidates who have invested months, sometimes years, in preparation.

Members recommended that authorities provide adequate psychological support and financial assistance to affected students and their families. They called for a more compassionate approach in handling examination-related crises, recognizing the immense pressure young candidates face.

Proposal for Multiple NEET-UG Sessions Annually

One committee member put forward a notable suggestion—conducting NEET-UG two to three times a year instead of the current single-annual format. The rationale behind this proposal is to reduce the devastating impact on students when an examination is disrupted through no fault of their own.

Under the existing system, a student who loses an academic year due to a cancelled or compromised examination suffers irreparable damage to their career trajectory. Multiple sessions would provide flexibility and ensure that candidates do not have to wait an entire year for another opportunity, thereby reducing stress and safeguarding their academic progress.

The committee’s recommendations, if implemented, could mark a significant shift in how India conducts its medical entrance examinations, potentially bringing greater stability and credibility to a system that has faced repeated challenges in recent years.
